Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Clinical Fellow in the field of Neuropathology to become a part of our dynamic Department of Clinical Neuropathology. This role encompasses a structured training program over a span of three years, with the potential for extension, aimed at individuals aspiring to enhance their expertise in the evolving domain of Neuropathology.

The department is equipped with a state-of-the-art Neuro-histology laboratory, specializing in surgical biopsies and autopsies. Additionally, we have facilities for Neuromuscular studies, Electron Microscopy, and Molecular Neuropathology, which include advanced techniques such as methylation analysis, next-generation sequencing, and whole genome sequencing for both pediatric and adult brain tumors.

The ideal candidate should possess a minimum of 1 to 2 years of training in Histopathology or Neuropathology. While completion or eligibility for the FRCPath or European ENF examinations is not mandatory, it would be advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves:

  1. Assisting in the neuropathological surgical biopsy reporting process, including diagnostic intra-operative smears and molecular analyses of brain tumors, as well as reporting on muscle and nerve biopsies.
  2. Conducting Neuro autopsies and performing brain examinations for both hospital cases and Coroner investigations.
  3. Collaborating with the London Neurodegenerative Brain Bank, contributing to the diagnosis of autopsy brains.
  4. Engaging in research and educational activities within the department.

Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities include:

  1. Providing diagnostic neuropathology services for the hospital and associated health partners, ensuring the effective operation of the department under the supervision of Consultant Neuropathologists.
  2. Reporting on hospital and referred post-mortem cases, including Coroner and Brain Bank examinations.
  3. Participating in teaching, examination, and accreditation duties, contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance.
  4. Organizing multidisciplinary team meetings and clinicopathological conferences with clinical colleagues.
  5. Contributing to the department's Audit Programme.
  6. Conducting all activities in accordance with the contracted service level and operational plan for Clinical Neuropathology.
  7. Collaborating with clinical and professional colleagues to maintain staff productivity and job satisfaction.
  8. Adhering to Trust infection prevention and control policies and participating in annual training.
  9. Ensuring compliance with the Code of Practice within the department.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Basic medical qualification (e.g., MBBS or equivalent).
  • Full and Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligibility for registration within six months of interview.

Desirable:

  • Primary FRCPath or equivalent ENF.
  • Higher degree or diploma (PhD, MD).

Experience and Skills

Essential:

  • Experience in diagnostic histopathology or neuropathology for at least one to two years.
  • Experience in managing diagnostic laboratory services in a clinical and teaching environment.

Desirable:

  • Specialist training in Neuropathology with an interest in brain tumors and neuromuscular diseases.
  • Familiarity with the current structure of the Health Service and recent initiatives.

Management and Leadership Skills

Essential:

  • Able to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable:

  • Management course or qualification.

Research and Teaching Experience

Essential:

  • Understanding of medical audit principles.
  • Previous involvement in clinical research.
  • Experience in undergraduate teaching.

Desirable:

  • Completion of audit projects.
  • Relevant research experience in Neuropathology.
  • Teaching skills course or qualification.
