Job Responsibilities

The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for a dedicated Highway Maintenance Operator to contribute to the efficient operation of our infrastructure. As a qualified candidate, your responsibilities will include:

• Collaborating with team members to clear drainage systems, eliminate debris, manage brush, and maintain roadways.

• Operating various machinery, including but not limited to dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar distributors, rollers, loaders, and mowing tractors.

• Utilizing hand and power tools while performing manual labor tasks.

• Responding to emergencies that obstruct roadways, such as traffic incidents and debris, to ensure traffic control and facilitate road reopening. Emergency response may necessitate working outside standard hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Establishing work zones and executing traffic control measures, emphasizing proper site protection.

Minimum Qualifications


• Capability to perform strenuous manual labor.

• Proficiency in operating and maintaining hand and power tools.

• Safety footwear is mandatory.

• Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and DOT medical certification within a specified period of employment and maintain compliance thereafter. Must adhere to DOT and VDOT regulations when operating CDL equipment.

• Competence in reading and following both oral and written instructions.

• Skill in operating and maintaining light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

• Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.

• Familiarity with highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Additional Considerations


• Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storm response, and accident clean-up.

• Background in performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.

• A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations, or a related field is preferred.

• Experience in roadway maintenance and construction is advantageous.

• A valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements is required.
