Senior Oncology Operations Manager - Permanent Position

An exceptional opportunity has emerged to become a pivotal member of our Oncology Services Team at Tameside & Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust as a Senior Oncology Operations Manager. We are in search of a proactive and enthusiastic individual to oversee the Oncology Services Team.

This role will offer the successful candidate a chance to acquire experience across a broad spectrum of both performance and operational challenges. The ideal candidate will possess a background in collaborating with multi-disciplinary healthcare teams and system partners, along with outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities. A proven track record of meeting targets and deadlines, coupled with a strong capacity for adaptation and high resilience, is essential.

Main Responsibilities

Excellent organizational skills are crucial for coordinating the delivery of a comprehensive, high-quality service for our patients. The successful candidate will manage information related to patient pathways, ensuring that cancer targets (both statutory and local) are consistently met and maintained. This will involve collaboration with the senior management team to support service enhancement and development initiatives within the Oncology Services department and across broader operational and clinical teams.

The post holder must have experience working effectively with system partners and agencies to ensure that our cancer pathways align with best practices.

A primary goal for this position is to guarantee the provision of the highest quality care and experience for our patients through effective operational performance management of all Oncology Services.

This is a challenging yet fulfilling role suited for a highly motivated, solution-oriented, and adaptable manager.

Job Responsibilities

Professional / Clinical

Provide professional oncology leadership and guidance for all staff, ensuring appropriate structures are established to support the cancer pathways.

Offer professional and operational advice and guidance at a senior level to the Directorate management teams, including support and diagnostic services concerning the cancer agenda.

Deliver dynamic leadership for change and service improvement across all oncology areas.

Collaborate with Directorate management teams to take responsibility for the delivery of all national cancer waiting times standards.

Partner with peers and senior operational and clinical managers to provide advice and intervention for specific cancer projects.

Lead and implement designated work streams and projects as required.

Contribute effectively to the development of the Trust's cancer strategy.

Assist the Lead Cancer Clinician and Lead Cancer Nurse Manager in identifying drivers for change and opportunities for enhancing and redesigning cancer services.

Work with the Quality and Governance Team and Divisional Governance Leads to advance the cancer quality and safety agenda.

Maintain close liaison with the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance and the Lead GM Cancer Managers to execute the Cancer Reform Strategy, the NHS Cancer Plan, and Cancer Survivorship initiatives.

Act as a key liaison with the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, Clinical Commissioning Groups, and other significant stakeholders in delivering cancer services. Report back to various organizational forums, including the Trust's Cancer Board and key individuals such as the Trust's Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Integrated Governance Leads, Lead Cancer Clinician, Lead Cancer Nurse, and Chief Operating Officer.

Establish and nurture effective multi-disciplinary relationships within the organization and with external organizations. Participate in regional and national meetings as appropriate.

Maintain an up-to-date understanding of developments and changes in national policy and guidance related to all aspects of cancer pathways, ensuring that senior Directorate Managers are informed of the potential impact on services.

Develop, produce, and support compliance with policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines.

Prepare, communicate, and present highly complex and, at times, sensitive information in various formats (written, verbal, and formal presentations). This will include presentations to the Trust Cancer Board and Executive Management Teams, covering a wide range of cancer issues related to performance, quality, and patient experience.

Exhibit professionalism at all times, demonstrating the Trust's values and behaviors, serving as a role model for others and leading by example.

Establish connections with external agencies to ensure the ongoing development of innovative working methods and collaboration on key tasks within the health economy.

Managerial & Leadership

Provide leadership and line management to the Cancer Services management team, which includes the Cancer Performance Manager, Cancer Support Managers, and Cancer Data Manager. The Cancer Services management team oversees the Cancer MDT Coordinator team, Cancer Pathway Navigators, Cancer Care Coordinators, and Cancer Data team.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Educated to master's level, equivalent, or currently pursuing studies.

Desirable:

  • Management qualification.

Experience

Essential:

  • Significant demonstrable operational experience in a senior management role.
  • Experience in an acute hospital environment in a leadership capacity.
  • Proven track record of achieving service targets.
  • Evidence of effective management of a complex and diverse workforce.
  • Experience in leading and managing substantial change, with evidence of strategic negotiation and communication.

Desirable:

  • Experience in an on-call capacity autonomously.
  • Experience in a leadership role within Cancer Services.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential:

  • Evidence of master's level analytical thinking.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the current NHS agenda, challenges, and developments.
  • Knowledge of NHS legislation, statutory and legal requirements, corporate governance, and risk.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement tools and methodologies, including the implementation of quality frameworks.
  • Established and authentic leadership abilities, capable of providing leadership and empowering staff at all levels.

Desirable:

  • Experience involving patients, families, local communities, service users, and staff in shaping plans and delivering service improvements.
