Position Overview

Band 4 Urological Cancer Care Assistant

This is a part-time role requiring 30 hours of commitment each week.

We are seeking to appoint a Cancer Care Assistant to become a vital member of our urological cancer nursing team.

Our mission is to deliver exceptional cancer care and comprehensive support to all patients, and our dedicated team of Cancer Care Assistants plays an essential role in achieving this goal.

In this position, you will operate under the guidance of registered nursing staff, offering patients and their families general information and assistance regarding cancer-related matters and available services.

Your responsibilities will also include supporting the team with administrative tasks, ensuring the efficient and timely follow-up of patients undergoing surveillance post-cancer treatment.

Comprehensive training will be provided, and you will find the working environment to be welcoming and supportive.

Informal visits and/or phone discussions are highly encouraged to learn more about the role and the team.

Key Responsibilities

This role encompasses administrative support and assistance to Clinical Nurse Specialists.

A significant aspect of your duties will involve daily and direct communication (both face-to-face and via telephone) with patients, their families, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals.

You will collaborate closely with fellow Cancer Care Assistants to monitor patients on surveillance using various systems and will assist in the administration of nurse-led clinics.

Strong communication and organizational skills are essential, and you should thrive in a small team environment. As part of your role, you will receive support to complete the Trust care certificate and engage in further learning related to cancer patient care.

While this position primarily supports the urological cancer nursing team, you may occasionally be asked to assist other teams, and the Cancer Care Assistant team also serves as department fire wardens on a rotational basis.

Job Responsibilities

Under the supervision of a registered practitioner, the Cancer Care Assistant aids in coordinating care by providing a single point of access, which includes:

  • Facilitating rapid re-entry into the system for individuals identified with urgent or specialized needs.
  • Offering general information and support regarding cancer and related services.

By promoting independence and self-management, this role empowers individuals to navigate the healthcare system and make informed choices that align with their cancer journey and lifestyle.

The information provided and the communication required are sensitive due to the nature of cancer care. This necessitates a high level of empathy, understanding, diplomacy, honesty, and integrity.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • GCSE English Language and Mathematics (Grades A-C) or equivalent.
  • Relevant administrative and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication abilities.

Desirable

  • NVQ4 or NVQ3 with additional training to diploma level equivalent, or equivalent through short courses.
  • Successful completion of an adult care certificate.
  • Relevant health or social care experience at AfC Band 3 or equivalent.
  • Experience in multiprofessional collaboration.
  • Experience working with individuals diagnosed with cancer.
