About the Role

University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust is seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to join our Laboratory Medicine service as an Associate Practitioner. This is an exciting opportunity to broaden your experience and work in a modern and well-equipped laboratory, providing an extensive repertoire of investigations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work in a supervisory role over a busy referral and send-away reception, responsible for receipting and sending thousands of samples per month.
  • Act as a critical decision-maker in pre-analytic workflow, troubleshooting issues and problem samples.
  • Communicate effectively with wards, doctors, external hospitals, and GPs to provide a high-quality service.
  • Contribute to the provision of a high-quality service, ensuring the smooth operation of laboratory processes.

Requirements

  • A level or equivalent in at least two from Maths, English, and Science at level A to C.
  • Previous experience in laboratory work, with knowledge of laboratory processes and the ability to handle a range of biological samples.
  • Able to maintain a personal portfolio that demonstrates competence in theoretical knowledge and practical skills, and compliance with statutory and mandatory training.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • ECDL or equivalent knowledge of computers.
  • Previous knowledge of hospital IT systems.
  • Completion of an internal multidisciplinary laboratory training course.
  • Previous experience in an NHS environment.
  • Previous experience of performing laboratory procedures.
  • Previous experience in a diagnostic medical laboratory.
