Consultant Ophthalmologist in Oculoplastics and Orbit

An exceptional opportunity exists for the role of Consultant Ophthalmologist specializing in Oculoplastics within a leading healthcare institution. We are seeking a proactive and skilled professional to enhance our team of Ophthalmic Consultants, dedicated to improving ophthalmic services.

Candidates must possess full registration with the GMC and be listed on the GMC Specialist Register for surgical Ophthalmology or be within 6 months of obtaining a CCT at the time of the interview.

The Ophthalmology department provides a wide array of both routine and specialized ophthalmic services. The successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the advancement and delivery of Oculoplastic sub-specialty services.

Key Responsibilities

A diverse range of ophthalmic patients are treated, and the appointee will oversee the management of those patients under their care.

  • Collaborate with Consultant colleagues to deliver a comprehensive elective and emergency ophthalmic service.
  • Provide reciprocal cover during periods of absence.
  • Maintain ongoing responsibility for patient care and ensure the department operates effectively.
  • Duties may be reviewed periodically to adapt to the evolving needs of the service, with any changes mutually agreed upon.
  • The appointee will be expected to prioritize the responsibilities of this role.

Job Duties

For comprehensive details regarding the role, please refer to the attached job description and person specification. The scope of work includes eyelid, lacrimal, pediatric oculoplastics, orbits, and eye casualty.

  • Conduct clinics, including a 1:4 pediatric oculoplastic clinic.
  • Flexibility for unplanned emergencies.
  • Participate in Skin MDT.
  • Engage in Skullbase MDT.
  • Attend Skin MDT on Thursday afternoons.
  • Participate in Skullbase MDT on Tuesday mornings.

There may be future requirements to work weekends and evenings based on service demands.

Person Specification: Professional Registration
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the specialist register.
  • CCT expected within 6 months of the interview date.
Professional Qualifications
  • FRCS/FRCOphth or equivalent.
  • Higher professional degree, such as ChM, DM, PhD, or equivalent.
Clinical Skills / Experience
  • Comprehensive general ophthalmic surgical training with extensive experience in general ophthalmology and sub-specialty expertise in Oculoplastics.
  • Fellowship level training in Oculoplastics.
  • Demonstrated technical skills as outlined in the job description.
  • Effective communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Specialized training in communication skills.
  • Training in patient safety and/or human factors.
  • Specific training in pediatric oculoplastic surgery.
Management Skills
  • Ability to develop, present, and implement coherent ideas for service improvement.
  • Teamwork capabilities.
  • Experience in change management.
Teaching, Audit, and Research
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical audit.
  • Participation in clinical research.
  • Ability to effectively teach and support junior staff.
  • Original research publications.
  • Higher teaching degree/qualification/training.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
