About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of System Engineering to join our team at SSE. As a key member of our Asset Management and Operations Directorate, you will be responsible for ensuring the design and technical engineering governance of our Transmission Business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain technical specifications for real-time system architectures and equipment used in our substations, including Ethernet networks, RTUs, HMIs, and substation control systems.
  • Collaborate with Technical Assurance engineers to ensure that all RTS equipment types are safe, adequately tested, configured, and validated prior to approval for use on the network.
  • Work with the Design Authority to verify project proposals for substation control systems and identify any scope changes required to ensure the network is adequately managed in accordance with legislation, Grid Code, and specifications.
Requirements
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status with a relevant institution or working towards chartered status.
  • Demonstrable experience in design, testing, and specification of control systems, including the use of IEC61850, PTP, and its associated Ethernet architectures within electrical substations or similar environments.
  • Knowledge of fibre installation, serial connectivity, DNP3, and other control system protocols.
  • Knowledge of implementation of cybersecurity best practices within a substation or other operational technology environment, as well as communications technologies and systems.
