Café / Kitchen Manager - YHA South Downs

We are seeking a dedicated Café / Kitchen Manager to oversee operations for 35 hours each week.
This role is ideal for an individual with a strong background in catering, looking to advance their career. The position entails daily involvement in our café, collaborating closely with our hostel teams. The Kitchen Manager will lead kitchen shifts, ensuring the preparation and presentation of our menu meets high standards, while also managing orders, stock control, team training, and adherence to health and safety regulations. You will work in partnership with the Hostel Manager and Deputy Manager to achieve our business objectives.
YHA South Downs is situated in the picturesque South Downs National Park, conveniently located near a train station. We are looking for a passionate team to support us during the busy summer season. Our converted farmhouse features 68 beds in the hostel, along with LandPods, Pods, and Bell Tents, accommodating a diverse range of guests from school groups to individuals exploring the South Downs Way. Our café is also open to the public, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

Responsibilities of the Kitchen Manager:
As a Kitchen Manager, you will be responsible for assisting in the management of an operational budget and achieving key performance indicators (KPIs). Your role will encompass a variety of customer-facing duties throughout the hostel, ensuring that all guests and visitors receive exceptional service and a memorable experience at YHA.
Your daily responsibilities may include:
- Overseeing the food and beverage operations within the hostel.
- Leading the preparation and delivery of food to meet YHA standards.
- Conducting cleaning tasks primarily within the kitchen and food service areas.
- Minimizing food and beverage waste.
- Maximizing food and beverage profitability.
Required Skills and Experience:
The Kitchen Manager role requires flexibility to cover various shifts and responsibilities. While previous experience in a customer-facing role is advantageous, it is not mandatory. Experience in hospitality or customer service, particularly in delivering high-quality service, is beneficial.
Significant experience in the hospitality sector is preferred, along with a solid understanding of food and beverage best practices. Desired qualifications include City & Guilds 706/1&2, NVQ4, or equivalent experience, as well as a Food Safety Level 2 Certificate. Familiarity with allergens and health and safety compliance, along with strong numeracy skills and experience in stock management and waste reduction, is essential.
As duties may vary, good communication skills, punctuality, and basic IT proficiency are advantageous.
Understanding YHA's core mission and having experience working collaboratively in a team setting are beneficial. We value lived experiences as much as formal qualifications.
