We are seeking a dynamic, compassionate, and innovative individual to join our team in North East Scotland. This role is pivotal in fostering a deeper connection between communities and nature, as well as actively participating in its restoration and enhancement through a funded initiative.

Role Overview:

Your responsibilities will include sharing conservation narratives, cultivating robust relationships with local communities, educational institutions, community organizations, youth groups, and businesses through both in-person and virtual engagements. This will encompass organizing and facilitating events, co-developing educational programs, and delivering informative talks and guided walks.

A significant aspect of this role will be to engage with local high schools, aiming to inspire and implement outdoor learning experiences across various locations.

A primary objective will be to establish and lead a Rural Skills (Environmental Conservation) Modern Apprenticeship program, aimed at motivating local youth aged 16-19 to acquire the skills and experiences necessary for a sustainable career in nature conservation. You will play a crucial role in their recruitment and ongoing support.

As we confront the challenges posed by the nature and climate crises, it is essential for individuals and communities to appreciate and be empowered to safeguard the natural world. The successful candidate will guide young people through a journey of awareness, knowledge, concern, and action, including introducing diverse career paths in conservation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the NE Scotland Community Engagement Officer to create and execute a program of activities for children and young people that enhances awareness and understanding of conservation priorities, fostering high levels of community involvement.
  • Build and manage a volunteer team to meet established objectives and ensure an enriching volunteering experience for all participants.
  • Develop partnerships to support regional initiatives.
  • Monitor and assess community outcomes, providing progress reports and recommending adjustments as necessary to meet commitments to stakeholders.
  • Ensure all activities align with organizational branding guidelines to maintain a consistent reputation.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety regulations to fulfill legal and policy obligations.

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Basic understanding of wildlife, habitats, and key species in North East Scotland.
  • Familiarity with both formal and informal educational settings.
  • Strong grasp of safeguarding protocols to ensure compliance with Child Health and Safety standards.
  • Experience with risk assessment procedures.
  • Ability to plan, facilitate, and deliver engaging programs.
  • Excellent communication skills suitable for all age groups.
  • Experience in collaborative work with partners.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Teaching qualification.
  • Familiarity with the Curriculum for Excellence.
  • Experience in project planning and execution.
  • Training experience for staff and volunteers.
  • Background in teaching or community engagement.
  • Understanding of the co-design process.

While expertise in conservation is not a prerequisite for success in this role, the ability to connect with and inspire young individuals, coupled with a genuine enthusiasm for the environment, is essential.

Additional Information:

This position requires the completion of a PVG and standard pre-employment checks. We are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace, recognizing that a variety of perspectives enrich our mission. We particularly encourage applications from individuals who identify as people of color and/or disabled, as these groups are currently underrepresented in the environmental sector.

The organization is an equal opportunities employer. This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

As part of the application process, candidates will be required to submit a CV and complete an application form detailing how they meet the specified skills and experience.
