Job Title: Executive Director of Research Services

Join the University of Glasgow as we seek an exceptional Executive Director of Research Services to lead our research strategy and operations. As a key member of our senior leadership team, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our research services and driving excellence in all aspects of research.

About the Role

The Executive Director of Research Services will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and management of our research services, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation, and ensuring that our research operations are effective, efficient, and responsive to the evolving needs of our researchers and stakeholders.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Develop and implement a research strategy that aligns with the University's overall objectives and priorities.
  2. Provide leadership and management of the Research Services Directorate, ensuring that our research operations are of the highest quality and meet the needs of our researchers and stakeholders.
  3. Foster a culture of collaboration and innovation, encouraging staff to work together to achieve our research goals.
  4. Ensure that our research services are effective, efficient, and responsive to the evolving needs of our researchers and stakeholders.
  5. Develop and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders, including academics, researchers, and external partners.
  6. Provide leadership and guidance to the Research Services Directorate, ensuring that our research operations are aligned with the University's overall strategy and objectives.
  7. Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure that our research operations are compliant with relevant laws, regulations, and University policies.
  8. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of our research services, identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes as necessary.
  9. Develop and manage budgets and resources to ensure that our research operations are financially sustainable and effective.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • Executive-level knowledge and understanding of the higher education sector, the national and international research policy framework, and legislation relevant to research and postgraduate research.
  • Demonstrable vision and strategic leadership skills, including the ability to define and develop strategy, and translate into effective operational plans.
  • Outstanding communication and engagement skills, with the ability to build meaningful relationships with academics and professional staff at all levels.
  • Ability to empower, coach, and influence others, working collaboratively across organisational boundaries to maximise opportunities.
  • Understanding of university governance and an ability to work effectively within a collegial decision-making culture.
  • Creativity, flexibility, and innovative approaches to problem-solving, with the ability to manage change in a complex environment.
  • Drive, enthusiasm, and integrity, with the proven ability to deliver results to tight deadlines and to demonstrate resilience under pressure.
