Position Overview
As a part-time Mandarin Language Specialist, you will have the opportunity to utilize your linguistic and cultural knowledge within a flexible working arrangement. This role is ideal for individuals who are enthusiastic about language and enjoy fostering the development of others, as you will be responsible for providing language training and guidance to junior Language Specialists.
Your expertise in Mandarin language and culture will be instrumental in creating educational and assessment resources, as well as translating and transcribing materials to enhance our language technology initiatives.
Role Responsibilities
You will collaborate with a supportive and vibrant community of Language Specialists who share your enthusiasm for Mandarin. In this distinctive linguistic environment, you will engage in individual projects while also mentoring fellow linguists, allowing for ample interaction and knowledge exchange. Your training and mentorship will contribute to the enhancement of our language capabilities, supporting national security efforts.
The position offers flexibility; however, you will be expected to conduct your language coaching duties on-site during standard office hours. There is also the potential for remote work, particularly when preparing teaching materials, which can be done outside of regular hours based on your preference. Occasional travel may be required.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess proficient speaking and writing skills in Mandarin, alongside fluency in English. While no specific professional qualifications are mandated, experience in teaching, mentoring, or training within a language-focused setting is advantageous. Suitable backgrounds may include academia, tutoring, or translation.
We seek individuals who are supportive and encouraging, with a genuine passion for language. Attention to detail is essential, as you will provide timely and constructive feedback to aid in the ongoing language development of your colleagues. Proficiency in IT is also required, along with a willingness to learn how to independently manage language technology projects.
Important Information
To be eligible for this position, candidates must be British citizens or hold dual British nationality. A certain level of security clearance is necessary, which involves a thorough vetting process.
Applicants will be required to complete a detailed questionnaire and participate in an interview with a vetting officer, focusing on personal experiences to ensure suitability for the required security clearance.
It is important to note that we maintain a strict policy regarding drug use, and candidates must refrain from recreational drug use during the application process.
Compensation and Benefits
The role offers an hourly wage, along with reimbursement for travel expenses incurred while commuting to the office. Reasonable public transport costs will be covered, and candidates are expected to utilize the most economical travel options.
