Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

Are you a skilled Midwife dedicated to the process of labour induction?

Join our team at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and contribute to enhancing the quality of care for women and newborns who utilize our maternity services.

We have initiated a quality enhancement project aimed at refining the safety and quality of care for women undergoing the induction of labour process. This initiative includes the formation of a dedicated Induction of Labour Team situated on the antenatal ward. We are seeking passionate midwives who are committed to delivering exceptional induction of labour care to be part of this innovative team.

The ideal candidates will possess a strong understanding of the evidence surrounding induction of labour, along with outstanding communication and intrapartum skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess referrals and ensure prompt scheduling for induction of labour as the midwifery lead within a multidisciplinary framework.
  • Oversee the induction of labour area, managing daily operations to minimize delays and optimize capacity while ensuring a secure environment for women and their families. This includes developing and conveying induction plans to women and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Engage effectively with broader multidisciplinary teams to guarantee high-quality, individualized care for all women, including those who opt out of induction or choose alternative birth options, while respecting their autonomy, privacy, and dignity.

About Our Services

At Oxfordshire, we provide a distinctive maternity service setup, with approximately 7200 births annually. Our facilities include four independent Midwifery Led Birth units and home birth options across the region. Additionally, our integrated birth unit accommodates around 10% of birthing individuals. The John Radcliffe, as a large tertiary hospital, features a comprehensive Delivery Suite, maternity theatres, and specialized recovery wards.

We prioritize the well-being of our staff, offering support through a dedicated Maternity Psychologist and Professional Midwifery Advocates. Our Practice Development Team is available to assist staff in exploring career pathways and development opportunities, ensuring every team member feels valued and empowered.

We are committed to fostering a supportive work environment, believing that a happy and well-supported workforce translates to the highest quality of care for those who access our services.

Job Duties

  • Facilitate the education and professional growth of student midwives by serving as a practice supervisor/assessor.
  • Refer women to appropriate practitioners when their needs exceed your scope of practice.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse individuals to navigate complex issues and make informed decisions.
  • Handle sensitive information regarding women's medical conditions with compassion and empathy, especially in challenging situations.
  • Adopt a non-judgmental approach when assessing and advising women and their families during crises.
  • Encourage women to take charge of their health and well-being, as well as that of their babies, while addressing their concerns.
  • During high-acuity periods, provide clinical support in other areas as needed to maintain safety within the maternity unit.
  • Identify and manage challenging behaviors effectively.
  • Analyze and interpret information to ensure the management of women aligns with risk considerations throughout their pregnancy journey.
  • Engage in audits and quality improvement initiatives as part of change management.
  • Maintain compliance with mandatory training to ensure safe care delivery.
