Pharmacy Specialist – Gastroenterology Services
2 months ago
Job Overview
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is a progressive teaching facility providing acute healthcare services to a diverse population. As one of the largest acute teaching hospitals in the UK, we maintain strong affiliations with both the School of Pharmacy and the Medical School at the nearby University of East Anglia. Our commitment to innovative healthcare delivery is evident through the implementation of electronic prescribing and medicines administration across all inpatient wards, emergency services, and outpatient departments.
This position is ideal for a seasoned pharmacist dedicated to enhancing patient care quality. While prior experience in gastroenterology is preferred, it is not a prerequisite as comprehensive training will be offered.
We encourage informal visits to our departments or inquiries regarding this role. Our recruitment team is also available to provide resources to assist with your application process.
The working hours are Monday to Friday, with a requirement to work one weekend every ten weeks, along with one public holiday each year.
Key Responsibilities
In recognition of the exceptional pharmacy support provided by our current team, we are excited to announce a new opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced pharmacist to join the Gastroenterology Multidisciplinary Team. The role includes participation in outpatient clinics, where you will serve as an independent prescriber, conducting patient evaluations and ensuring the optimization of medication use. This position offers a fantastic opportunity to develop advanced clinical skills in gastroenterology while gaining valuable experience in service enhancement.
Additional responsibilities encompass supporting clinical governance initiatives, including the development of guidelines, policies, and procedures related to medication use in gastroenterology, as well as engaging in research and educational activities.
Successful candidates will become part of a welcoming pharmacy team committed to delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care. Although the primary focus will be on gastroenterology clinics, you will also participate in ward rounds and contribute to the broader clinical pharmacy service, mentoring junior pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and trainees.

Job Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will be self-driven, capable of working autonomously, and adept at thriving in a dynamic environment. A positive demonstration of the Trust's PRIDE values is essential. We support the professional development of advanced practice roles, leadership skills, and the completion of an independent prescribing qualification for those who do not already possess one.
Responsibilities include maintaining, developing, and expanding clinical pharmacy services within the Gastroenterology Directorate. This practitioner role requires the post holder to work independently while adhering to guidelines and directives from the Divisional Lead Pharmacist, Medicine, and to supervise pharmacists, trainee pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians while collaborating with technical and support staff.
The role also involves acting as an expert resource on the safe and effective use of medications for managing older patients, including initiating and deprescribing medications and promoting the discharge medicines service. This includes policy development, conducting audits, and actively participating in the training and development of pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.
The successful candidate will provide high-quality clinical pharmacy services as part of the clinical pharmacy team, addressing the needs of patients and healthcare professionals within the Trust.
To ensure the delivery of a high-quality, safe, and compassionate healthcare service, all staff are expected to serve as role models in all aspects of their work and consistently demonstrate NNUH's PRIDE values of People-focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence, fostering an inclusive culture.
