About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Band 7 Specialist Glaucoma Practitioner to join our glaucoma service at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for providing expert clinical care to patients with glaucoma, working closely with consultants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients with glaucoma, including planning and undertaking clinical assessments and developing treatment plans.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality patient care, including participating in consultant-led and multidisciplinary clinics, patient reviews, and team meetings.
  • Develop and implement clinical guidelines and protocols to ensure best practice in glaucoma care, and contribute to the development of education and training programs for staff.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of service improvement initiatives, including quality improvement projects and service redesign.
  • Provide leadership and support to junior staff, including supervision, assessment, and role modeling, to ensure the development of a skilled and confident team.

Person Specification
  • Professional registration with the General Optical Council (GOC), Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Post-registration CPD and/or post-registration qualification in glaucoma, or equivalent experience with a commitment to undertake.
  • Significant experience working at Band 6 level or equivalent as an optometrist, orthoptist, or registered nurse in a background treating patients with eye-related disorders and conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, and families, and to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work autonomously, manage and prioritize workload, and supervise and appraise junior staff.
  • Competent in a range of clinical skills, including anterior segment examination, Goldman tonometry, and interpretation of ocular coherence topography.
