Position Overview
We are seeking a full-time, substantive Glaucoma Specialist Consultant to become a vital member of our esteemed team of medical professionals dedicated to delivering exceptional healthcare services.
The successful candidate will join as the second glaucoma specialist within our institution, contributing to a comprehensive array of services that encompass all glaucoma surgical procedures, including Trabeculectomy, Baerveldt and Ahmed implants, Istent, presiflow, and other micro-incision devices, as well as various laser treatments such as YAG, SLT, and cyclodiode.
Key Responsibilities
All consultants within the department hold a continuous and individual responsibility for the care of their patients, alongside a collective duty to provide an effective Ophthalmology Service tailored to the needs of the local community, utilizing available resources efficiently.
The appointee will collaborate within a larger multidisciplinary team, which includes nurses, nurse practitioners, optometrists, orthoptists, and an Eye Care Liaison Officer.
Our department actively engages in research initiatives, and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to ongoing studies and support current research projects.
In enhancing the glaucoma ophthalmology service, the candidate will work closely with the existing glaucoma consultant and assist in the development of nurse practitioners and specialized optometrists.
Additionally, the successful candidate will be tasked with advancing community services in collaboration with local healthcare facilities to establish a cohesive community pathway for glaucoma management.

Clinical Duties
The appointee will be expected to:
- Share consultant clinical responsibilities within the department, including overseeing junior medical staff and facilitating the continued growth of the glaucoma service. The allocation of clinical session time will be determined in collaboration with consultant colleagues, with an anticipated total of 10 Programmed Activities (PA), including 7 direct clinical care sessions and time for professional development.
- Provide coverage for colleagues during their absences.
- Participate in the consultant on-call rota, supporting the registrar who is first on call.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications
- Entry on the Specialist Register (or expected within six months).
- FRCOphth or equivalent qualification.
- Proven ability to provide expert opinions in glaucoma management and perform surgical interventions, including cataract surgery and trabeculectomy.
- Experience in advising on the efficient operation of specialized services.
- Demonstrated experience in managing junior medical staff.
Desirable Qualifications
- Post-CCT Fellowship in Glaucoma and/or Advanced Specialty Training in Ophthalmology.
- Proven ability to lead a specialized unit and manage surgical business operations.
- Experience in supervising postgraduate research initiatives.
