Bedford, Bedford, United Kingdom Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

We are seeking applications for a full-time position within our acute healthcare facility, dedicated to serving a diverse population. This role is aligned with the established terms and conditions of service for consultant contracts.

This is a remarkable opportunity to fill a newly established role aimed at addressing the growing demands and advancements within the Pulmonary Department. The ideal candidate will enhance our dynamic and dedicated multi-disciplinary team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, clinically effective pulmonary services across both inpatient and elective care pathways.

The Department offers a comprehensive array of services, including Pulmonary Function Testing, bronchoscopy, management of Tuberculosis, Lung Cancer, Interstitial Lung Disease, Severe Asthma, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Pleural Procedures, Sleep Medicine, and Non-invasive Ventilation. The successful candidate will collaborate with existing consultants to provide a thorough pulmonary medicine service and participate in an on-call rota for non-invasive ventilation coverage.

Candidates with a sub-specialty interest relevant to a District General Hospital are encouraged to submit their applications.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the highest clinical standards in managing all patients presenting to the facility. This includes optimizing safe and timely patient discharges and supporting overall patient flow.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Collaborating with colleagues in the Pulmonary Department to manage all adult patients with respiratory disorders referred to the Trust.
  2. Actively engaging in departmental and Trust-wide initiatives related to Clinical Governance and audit.
  3. Participating in continuing professional development (CPD) activities.

About Our Organization

Our Trust provides essential hospital services to a growing population, ensuring access to state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge healthcare. We are committed to delivering exceptional patient care through the integration of advanced clinical knowledge and technology.

Job Responsibilities

The appointee will join a well-established Pulmonary Department, enhancing consultant capacity to ensure an effective and seamless service in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Opportunities may arise for involvement at other hospital sites, depending on clinical interests.

Candidates with a relevant sub-specialty interest are welcomed, as well as those enthusiastic about teaching, audit, and research. Specific sub-specialty responsibilities will be negotiated among the consultant team following appointments. The appointee will participate in a seven-day service rota and respiratory on-call duties.

New consultants will receive dedicated time in their job plans for service development and pursuing sub-specialty interests. We encourage applications from both newly qualified and experienced consultants seeking a new challenge.

The post-holder will be expected to cover colleagues' absences during annual or study leave. Weekly commitments will adhere to European working hour directives and will be influenced by Royal College of Physicians recommendations.

Professional Development

The allocation of programmed activities will encompass direct clinical care and supporting professional activities. Detailed job plans will be established in consultation with the Clinical Director and the Department's Consultants, with the approval of the Medical Director.

Job plans will outline the consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the upcoming year, covering all aspects of professional practice, including clinical work, teaching, research, and managerial responsibilities.

Work Environment

Our facility is known for its collaborative atmosphere and strong working relationships. We actively support the education of medical students and have a reputation for excellent training for junior staff.

The surrounding areas offer attractive rural settings with excellent schools and amenities.

Applicants must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council's Specialist Register and hold MRCP. Specialist Registrars nearing CCT are also encouraged to apply.

Additional Information

Candidates unable to commit to full-time hours for personal reasons are also invited to apply. The appointment will be subject to full Occupational Health Clearance.
