Position Overview
The Specialist Palliative Care team is composed of a dedicated group of Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), a Practice Educator, and Consultants. This team provides essential support to all inpatient adult services and collaborates closely with Specialist Palliative Care Community Nurses. The organization has embraced a comprehensive End of Life Care Strategy that outlines key objectives for the upcoming years. This role is ideal for physicians aspiring to advance their careers in palliative medicine, with opportunities for portfolio development available.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the CNS team to oversee the corporate caseload at Bedford Hospital, including conducting new patient evaluations and offering medical support to nursing staff.
- In partnership with medical colleagues, manage daily patient care to ensure appropriate medical evaluations and treatment.
- Regularly review patient cases with medical colleagues and multidisciplinary team members to establish and implement management plans in close coordination with ward teams.
- Engage in multidisciplinary ward team meetings to discuss patient care strategies.
- Attend to the individual needs of patients, their families, and caregivers, participating in family meetings and case discussions as necessary.
- Provide guidance and support to General Practitioners and other Primary Healthcare Team members to assist patients in the community.
- Offer medical consultations and follow-up care for outpatient services as required.
- Maintain accurate, professional, and timely medical records.
- Ensure all prescribing practices align with hospital policies and legal regulations.
- Collaborate with various health professionals to plan and review patient care.
- Support the CNS team, including nurse prescribers, through clinical and educational supervision.
- Provide insights on ethical considerations related to patient care.
- Work alongside Governance and Clinical teams to uphold and enhance care standards.
- Contribute to the End of Life Strategy by participating in educational programs.
Qualifications and Experience

- Medical Degree

- Additional relevant clinical experience
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP)

- Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
Clinical Experience

- Comprehensive experience in District General Hospital (DGH) settings
- Experience at Internal Medicine Training (IMT) level
- Ability to work autonomously while recognizing personal limitations and knowing when to seek senior advice

- Experience in palliative care
