We are seeking a highly skilled Computer Systems Engineer to join our team at Universal Quantum. As a key member of our team, you will play a crucial role in designing and developing modular, reliable, and scalable operational systems for our real-time control systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and Develop Operational Systems: Collaborate with our team of scientists and engineers to design and develop operational systems that meet the needs of our quantum computing systems.
  • Develop Innovative Solutions: Work with diverse subsystem teams to develop innovative solutions to complex challenges in real-time control systems.
  • Lead Software Development: Spearhead the design and development of verifiable software that runs efficiently in parallel across multiple machines/architectures.
  • Support Experimentation: Support experimentation and continuously adapt to new discoveries from our Physics team.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Participate in knowledge sharing and code reviews to improve product quality.

Requirements:

The 3 Most Critical Attributes We Will Use to Compare Candidates:

  1. Complex Problem-Solving: Proficiency in diagnosing and solving complex computing problems in resource-constrained systems.
  2. Reliable Networking Strategies: A good understanding of reliable networking strategies, data structures, and systems modelling.
  3. Collaborative Development: Experience with collaborative development, revision control, verification/validation, and unit testing.

Must-Have Skills:

  • Optimal Algorithm Development: A demonstrable successful project written in a popular, modern, high-level programming language which demonstrates an optimal algorithm for the task and efficient use of structured data.
  • Distributed Computing Environment: An appreciation of the implications of deploying software into a distributed live computing environment.
  • Networking Architectures: Familiarity with common networking architectures and protocols.
  • Git and Collaboration: Familiarity with Git and experience with collaborative design and development, and code reviews.
  • Communication Skills: Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to produce good documentation.
  • Research and Learning: Ability to rapidly grasp new concepts through research and reading.
  • Presentation and Compromise: Effective presentation of concepts and ideas to engineers and scientists, and being able to identify compromises and trade-offs.
  • Regular Attendance: Be able to attend our facility on a regular basis.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Commercial-Quality Software Development: Three or more years of experience developing commercial-quality software in a collaborative environment.
  • Software Bug Resolution: Aptitude for rapidly diagnosing and resolving software bugs.
  • Multi-Node System Programming: Experience in programming for a multi-node system.
  • Tool and Language Learning: Willingness to learn new tools and programming languages.
  • Hardware and Research Team Experience: Previous experience of working alongside hardware and/or research teams.
  • Embedded Systems and Real-Time Computing: Exposure to embedded systems and real-time computing.
