Regimental Secretary for the Royal Welsh

Cardiff, Cardiff, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Position Overview

The Regimental Headquarters of the Royal Welsh Regiment operates as a compact and cohesive unit. It is an integral part of Headquarters Infantry, guided by the Colonel of The Regiment and the Divisional Lieutenant Colonel.

The primary mission is to foster a robust regimental identity and to assist all facets of the regimental community in promoting the Regiment, enhancing recruitment efforts, and improving operational effectiveness during both peacetime and conflict.

The individual in this role will serve as a principal contact for regimental matters, engaging in outreach and community involvement while providing a diverse array of support services and guidance to the regiment.

Collaboration with both active and retired personnel is essential, as is the ability to address inquiries from the public regarding current and historical regiments.

This position demands a credible representative of the regiment, both within military circles and the broader recruiting area. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of the legal frameworks surrounding charities, health and safety, equal opportunities, and property management.

Key Responsibilities

A significant component of this role involves generating positive media engagement through partnerships with local councils and internal stakeholders, including military media operations and battalions. The postholder will oversee the dissemination of pertinent news via the Regimental Website, social media platforms, and the Regimental Journal.

Additionally, the role includes promoting the 'Army in Society' initiative throughout the region, with a focus on public events and community initiatives.

Engagement with the supportive Royal Welsh community is vital, with efforts directed towards increasing the number of counties that have granted the Regiment 'The Freedom of the County' and organizing related parades in collaboration with Battalions, Army Cadet Forces, and the Regimental Association.

Planning and executing Homecoming Parades, as well as developing the Regiment’s Officers’ Society, including coordinating annual dinners and St David’s Day Lunches, are also part of the responsibilities.

This role serves as the central point for the Royal Welsh Club, which supports veterans in their job search and connects them with mental health resources as needed.

The postholder will also play a role in the development of regimental museums, coordinating efforts across three regimental museums through The Royal Welsh Regimental Museum Trust, and collaborating with local museums to enhance the visibility of the regiment's history.

Efforts will be made to engage younger community members and increase interest in the museums among the Army Cadet Force, the Regimental Association, and the wider community.

Furthermore, the individual may assist in preparing for and representing the Headquarters at veterans’ funerals, and in critical situations, may act as a 'Casualty Notifying Officer' and 'Casualty Visiting Officer', providing support to bereaved families and connecting them with necessary welfare resources.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential criteria include being self-motivated, highly organized, and capable of coordinating activities to facilitate effective teamwork, including stepping in for the Regimental Secretary as needed.

Strong communication skills are crucial, with the ability to engage confidently at all levels, including military, civilian, and governmental sectors.

The ideal candidate will be adaptable to changing circumstances, able to lead and prioritize a dynamic workload with minimal supervision.

Proficiency in IT, particularly with Office 365 systems, is advantageous.

Due to the nature of certain veteran and cadet events, candidates must be willing to work evenings and weekends as required, with compensatory time off provided.

Desirable criteria include familiarity with service and civilian social support systems, including organizations such as SSAFA, ABF, and The Royal British Legion.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Ministry of Defence contributes significantly towards a Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Other benefits include:

  • Learning and development tailored to the role
  • Flexible working options
  • A culture that promotes inclusion and diversity
  • Access to a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
  • Enhanced parental and adoption leave
  • Special leave for volunteering activities

The Ministry of Defence is committed to fostering a supportive work environment that encourages a healthy work-life balance and the professional growth of its employees.
