In partnership with your team, you will offer media counsel and support to Cabinet Secretaries and senior officials. By monitoring and assessing your media initiatives, you will ensure that objectives are achieved.

Establishing strong and constructive relationships with journalists is crucial to this role, as is reaching out to key external influencers and experts.

Securing positive media coverage is a core responsibility, necessitating a keen news sense, creativity, and enthusiasm. A significant aspect of this role involves effectively pitching stories to news editors and journalists, so we seek an individual with a proactive, resilient, and can-do attitude.

In response to breaking news, you must be capable of swiftly and accurately assessing situations to identify potential challenges. Working alongside your team, you will implement crisis management strategies as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with Cabinet Secretaries, Ministers, senior policy officials, and communication teams to create and execute imaginative media strategies and campaigns;
  • Foster strong relationships with UK, Welsh, regional, and specialized media, along with key digital platforms;
  • Demonstrate the ability to meet deadlines, working independently and as part of a team;
  • Respond promptly and accurately to reactive media inquiries and breaking news stories;
  • Correct and refute inaccurate news reports when necessary;
  • Utilize sound judgment to become a trusted advisor to Cabinet Secretaries and senior policy colleagues;
  • Build effective working relationships with journalists and other stakeholders, providing guidance and support as needed;
  • Assist the Chief Press Officer in managing the press team by directly overseeing a team of junior press officers, setting priorities, managing workflow, providing leadership, and supporting their professional development;
  • Employ a comprehensive range of insights and evaluation tools to target communications and assess their effectiveness, using this information for continuous improvement;
  • Maintain high professional standards, including exceptional writing skills;
  • Stay informed about developments in the communications landscape, particularly regarding the integration of digital and social media into comprehensive communication plans, and share insights with colleagues;
  • Collaborate with communications colleagues across various disciplines to deliver cohesive strategic communications activities and broaden knowledge of all communication efforts.

Candidate Profile

What the organization expects:

  • You will manage defined areas of work, utilizing your specialized knowledge or experience to exercise sound judgment when interpreting complex or conflicting information, weighing all evidence to develop innovative solutions.
  • You will be adaptable, flexible, and open to change, managing that change efficiently and professionally.
  • You will demonstrate political awareness and an understanding of the political landscape when considering the implications of your decisions and work on the broader business area and when formulating proposals for Senior Managers and Ministers.

What your team expects:

  • You may be required to lead a team, providing clear direction to achieve their objectives. You will support team members in their work, including complex tasks, work allocation, performance management, training, and development.
  • You will value diversity and inclusion, fostering an environment where individuals feel safe to challenge, share ideas, and express concerns, adopting an inclusive leadership style.
  • You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining systems or processes that ensure excellence and value for money.

Stakeholder Expectations

  • You will lead in creating, building, and maintaining constructive relationships at all levels.
  • You will be able to tailor and adapt your communication style (both written and oral) to advise, guide, influence, and persuade internal and external stakeholders as appropriate.
