About the Role:
Our client is a key player in the UK's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, a public entity dedicated to the safe and efficient remediation of the UK's nuclear legacy. Their operations encompass a variety of tasks, including the secure transportation of materials to and from nuclear facilities and the provision of nuclear transport solutions for a diverse clientele both domestically and internationally.
In addition to their nuclear sector services, they also manage transport operations beyond this field, offering intermodal rail services in consumer goods and general freight sectors.
We are seeking a skilled Lead Design Engineer to join our client on a contract basis. The position offers flexibility regarding location and the potential for contract extension for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities:
Your primary role will involve steering the execution of engineering design tasks or projects to fulfill established time, cost, and quality benchmarks. This includes overseeing the performance of design engineers and third-party contractors.
You will also spearhead the engineering activities related to Radioactive Material (RAM) transport and provide expert technical guidance to both NTS and clients.
Principal Duties Include:
- Define and lead the execution of RAM transport system engineering design projects.
- Author and compile transport safety cases ensuring full compliance with IAEA SSR-6 regulations.
- Guarantee that all technical substantiation work supporting the authored transport safety cases meets the required quality and internal consistency standards.
- Possess a working knowledge of IAEA SSR-6 regulations and the ability to engage in discussions regarding specific clauses with the Competent Authority.
- Provide support to design engineers and review their outputs.
- Monitor and report on project progress against schedules, budgets, and other agreed KPIs.
- Adhere to current management processes and contribute to their ongoing development and enhancement.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional design engineer with the expertise necessary to define and lead engineering activities or small projects:
- A relevant degree in engineering (preferably mechanical) or equivalent academic qualifications and experience.
- A recognized professional engineering qualification.
- Proven experience and understanding of engineering design and substantiation as it pertains to RAM transport.
- Capability to define scopes of work, including the development of technical risk identification and mitigation strategies.
- Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with other areas of NTS and/or clients to ensure solutions align with the intended objectives.
Experience and the ability to lead engineering activities or small projects with minimal oversight will be essential.
