Position Overview

The Ophthalmic Nurse Specialist will be responsible for managing their own clinics, which include triaging, assessing, examining, and discharging patients. Our team is dedicated to providing exceptional patient care, and we foster a collaborative environment where team members can work both independently and collectively. Key Responsibilities

  1. Oversee the ward or department and act in the absence of the manager.
  2. Effectively delegate tasks to ensure smooth operations.
  3. Assess, plan, and evaluate patient care while guiding others in delivering evidence-based nursing practices.
  4. Facilitate communication across departments and step in for the Band 7 nurse as required.
  5. Maintain a safe working environment and address any issues promptly.
  6. Contribute to the monitoring and control of clinical practices to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  7. Ensure that patient care adheres to the highest standards in line with clinical nursing guidelines and the NMC Code of Conduct.

Educational Responsibilities

  1. Participate in the assessment of nursing students on placement and assist staff in completing mandatory training.
  2. Support the appraisal process for junior staff and help develop their personal development plans.
  3. Promote an active learning environment for student nurses and contribute to the training and development of the team.
  4. Engage in nursing audits and research to continually assess and improve care standards.

Research and Development

  1. Encourage research activities among nursing staff.
  2. Ensure regular audits of practice are conducted within the department.
  3. Develop systems to implement changes based on research findings and evidence-based practices.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Proven experience as a Registered General Nurse (RGN).
  • Demonstrated experience in the field of Ophthalmology.
  • Experience in managing a department and addressing personnel matters.

Qualifications

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN) qualification.
  • A recognized qualification in Ophthalmology or equivalent relevant experience.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of Clinical Governance issues.
  • Excellent communication abilities.
  • Capability to motivate and lead a team.
  • Proficiency in IT and strategic planning.
