About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Biomedical Scientist to join our Haematology Department at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a leading healthcare provider, renowned for its clinical excellence and innovative research.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process specialist investigations in the department
  • Provide specialist advice to clinicians on test appropriateness and timescales
  • Provide specialist service training and problem-solving for specialist requirements
  • Work independently and lead on specialist areas as directed by the Lead BMS
  • Act as a mentor for junior scientific and support staff
  • Work flexibly to meet service needs, including extended working days and participation in a 24/7 service
  • Supervise and train less experienced staff in own area of work
  • Work according to Health and Safety policies and procedures, handling human body fluids, tissues, and hazardous chemicals
  • Maintain and promote a professional image of the Trust
  • Lead and supervise a section of the laboratory as required

Requirements
  • HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in a relevant discipline or equivalent qualification
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Substantial practical experience in a Biomedical Science laboratory
  • Experience of Pathology IT systems
  • Experience of Quality Management Systems
  • Experience of training and supervision of staff
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Previous relevant experience in a Haematology Laboratory
  • Knowledge of Risk Assessments
Skills and Abilities
  • Willingness to undertake cross-training to extend skill set
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrable interpersonal skills, able to work as part of a team or independently
  • Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods
  • High degree of manual dexterity to perform complex laboratory techniques
  • Ability to follow processes and procedures
  • Ability to supervise less experienced staff, including supporting the training of staff
