Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Lead Clinical Pharmacist to enhance our pharmacy services and ensure the delivery of exceptional pharmaceutical care to our patients.

Employment Details

Band 7, 30 hours per week, competitive salary.

This role offers a part-time opportunity, with a work schedule from Monday to Friday, and may include some evening, weekend, and holiday responsibilities. Participation in the on-call service will also be required as per the established rota.

Applicants must hold a valid registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Key Responsibilities

The position is based within a healthcare facility, where the core responsibilities include:

  • Providing specialized clinical pharmacy support to designated wards and teams, including participation in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Leading the implementation of clinical and patient services for assigned areas, including overseeing any medication-related initiatives.
  • Identifying and contributing to audit topics relevant to the assigned wards and teams, promoting both pharmacy-based and multidisciplinary clinical audits.
  • Supporting dispensary operations by dispensing and verifying inpatient and outpatient prescriptions as needed.
  • Offering pharmaceutical guidance to patients and healthcare staff through the dispensary and via telephone consultations.
  • Collaborating with medical and nursing personnel to deliver comprehensive pharmaceutical services.

Clinical Pharmacy Services

  • Delivering specialized clinical services to assigned wards and teams, which includes:
    • Providing expert advice to patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
    • Reviewing prescription orders in accordance with established procedures, ensuring appropriateness of medication dosages and checking for potential interactions.
    • Participating in care planning and multidisciplinary team discussions as necessary.
    • Providing coverage for additional wards and units as required.
    • Contributing to the strategic development of the Clinical Pharmacy Service.
    • Advising on the cost-effective use of medications to support budget management.
    • Engaging in systems to evaluate clinical pharmacy contributions and providing reports as requested.
    • Investigating pharmaceutical issues arising from medication use and encouraging incident reporting.
    • Supporting prescribers within the pharmacist's areas of expertise.
    • Collaborating with pharmacy colleagues to ensure effective teamwork.

Management Responsibilities

  • Preparing and presenting regular reports on medication usage and expenditure to relevant teams.
  • Identifying opportunities for cost savings in medication expenditures and advising teams on budget management.
  • Participating in pharmacy team meetings and discussions.
  • Conducting risk assessments for the pharmaceutical services under your responsibility.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Recognized pharmacy degree or equivalent.
  • Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development at a postgraduate level.

Desirable:

  • Membership in the College of Mental Health Pharmacy.
  • Membership in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
  • Management qualification at Certificate level or higher.
  • Postgraduate Diploma or certificate in Mental Health Pharmacy.
  • Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy.

Experience

Essential:

  • Relevant post-registration experience.
  • Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical needs of mental health and learning disabilities service users.

Desirable:

  • Experience working within a mental health team or service.
  • Proven ability to develop procedures, guidelines, or protocols.
  • Experience in project and audit management.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential:

  • Familiarity with standard operating procedures for dispensaries and clinical pharmacy.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentation abilities.

Desirable:

  • Practical knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations.
