Position Overview
As a part-time Mandarin Language Specialist, you will engage in a flexible role that leverages your linguistic and cultural knowledge. This position is ideal for individuals who are enthusiastic about language and committed to nurturing the skills of others, as you will be responsible for providing language instruction and guidance to less experienced Language Specialists.
Your expertise in Mandarin language and culture will be instrumental in developing training and assessment resources, as well as translating and transcribing materials to enhance our language technology initiatives.
Role Responsibilities
You will collaborate within a supportive and dynamic community of Language Specialists who share your enthusiasm for Mandarin. In this distinctive linguistic environment, you will undertake individual projects while also training fellow linguists, fostering a culture of interaction and knowledge exchange. Your mentorship will play a crucial role in improving our language capabilities in alignment with national security objectives, and your contributions will be recognized and valued.
This role offers flexibility; however, you will be expected to conduct your language coaching during standard office hours on-site. Additionally, there may be opportunities for remote work, particularly when preparing instructional materials, which can be scheduled outside of regular hours based on your preferences. Occasional travel may also be required.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess strong Mandarin speaking and writing skills, alongside fluency in English. While specific professional qualifications are not mandatory, experience in teaching, mentoring, or training within a language-focused context is beneficial. Suitable backgrounds may include academia, tutoring, or translation.
We seek individuals who are supportive and encouraging, with a genuine passion for language. Attention to detail is essential, as you will provide timely and constructive feedback to aid in the ongoing development of your colleagues' language skills. Proficiency in IT is necessary, as you will be expected to independently navigate language technology projects.
Important Information
To be eligible for this position, candidates must be British citizens or hold dual British nationality. A level of security clearance, known as SC+ (Enhanced Security Check), is required, which involves a thorough vetting process.
All applicants will undergo a detailed assessment, including a questionnaire and an interview with a vetting officer, who will engage in an open and honest discussion regarding your personal background and experiences to determine suitability for the required clearance.

Compensation and Benefits
The position offers an hourly wage, along with reimbursement for travel expenses incurred while commuting to the office. Reasonable public transport costs will be covered, and candidates are expected to utilize the most economical travel options.
