Consultant in Neonatal and Paediatric Medicine
2 months ago
Position Overview
The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for a Consultant in Neonatal and Paediatric Medicine to join our dedicated and passionate team. This position will primarily focus on Neonatology while also incorporating some responsibilities in General Paediatrics, allowing for the development of additional specialty interests.
This is a full-time role comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), although we welcome applications from candidates interested in part-time opportunities.
This newly created position is part of a broader initiative to expand our consultant workforce, ensuring dedicated and specialized Neonatal service delivery. The successful candidate will integrate into an established team of senior medical professionals, including fellow Consultants.
We are committed to identifying the right individuals and fostering their long-term career growth. Our organization values a supportive environment, complemented by the picturesque surroundings that enhance the quality of life for our staff.
Key Responsibilities
This role is integral to the expansion of our neonatal and paediatric services. Upon joining, you will become part of a well-established, collaborative perinatal team dedicated to providing exceptional care to our community.
It is essential that new team members align with our vision and contribute to ongoing improvements in patient care. As a senior team member, you will play a crucial role in training and mentoring junior colleagues and a growing team of advanced neonatal nurse practitioners.
Our commitment to supporting new colleagues in achieving their professional development goals is paramount. The Trust places significant emphasis on staff wellbeing, offering a variety of resources to promote health and wellness, recognized by a National Award for our Health and Wellbeing initiatives.
Our Values
Our STAR values are fundamental to our operations. You can expect to see these values reflected in our actions and interactions. We anticipate that your values and behaviors will align with our organizational principles:
Service - We prioritize our patients' needs.
Teamwork - We collaborate effectively.
Ambition - We strive to deliver the highest quality service.
Respect - We uphold integrity in all our dealings.
Clinical Duties
The successful candidate must possess a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or an equivalent qualification. The role requires comprehensive training in both General Paediatrics and Neonatology. A special interest in Neonatology is advantageous, but we also welcome applicants with significant relevant experience.
The service commitment will follow a consultant of the week model, encompassing responsibilities for the neonatal unit and a separate service week as the postnatal ward/transitional care consultant. Regular involvement in GP advice and referral triage is also expected.
Participation in out-of-hours consultant cover for the neonatal unit will be required, typically on a rota basis (approximately 1:8 weekdays and weekends). On-call duties will necessitate collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across the perinatal service.
You will maintain ongoing responsibility for the care of your patients, including all associated administrative tasks, supported by secretarial assistance. Additionally, there will be a commitment to the Paediatric Assessment Unit and outpatient clinics for both neonatal and general paediatric cases.
Although there is no on-site Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), the neonatal team will provide critical care skills and support for stabilizing critically ill infants prior to transfer to a tertiary facility.
Daily ward rounds in the neonatal unit and transitional care unit will be conducted, ideally in partnership with the infants' parents.
All consultants are dedicated to supporting new team members, and a mentor will be assigned within the department.
Multidisciplinary teamwork is a vital aspect of our Trust, involving regular discussions with nursing, midwifery, obstetric, advanced neonatal nurse practitioners, and allied health professional teams.
Opportunities for developing subspecialty interests that align with departmental needs and the Trust's strategic direction will be available.
Responsibilities will also include teaching, examination, and accreditation duties, as well as contributing to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Participation in clinical audits and continuing medical education is expected, along with the ability to respond to emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. The post holder will also engage in an out-of-hours consultant rota as outlined in the job plan.
