Job Overview
We are looking for a dedicated Assistant Ward Manager to join our Acute Medicine Unit within the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
Our unit is a vibrant, fast-paced environment with 30 beds, where we prioritize the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients directly from the Emergency Department.
We seek a motivated and passionate nurse with a keen interest in Acute Medicine, who will uphold the high standards of care we are known for.
Are you a flexible leader with strong clinical skills and a commitment to reflective practice?
Mentorship experience is crucial, and while some background in Medicine is preferred, comprehensive training will be provided to the successful candidate.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will oversee shift coordination and manage the flow of stroke patients within the Acute Medicine Unit, ensuring seamless transitions to base sites for ongoing care.
Excellent communication skills are vital for effective collaboration with bed management, duty management, and matrons during your shifts, while also providing support to our team members.

Job Duties
- Take charge of the management of a ward or department, including assessing care needs and implementing evidence-based care programs in the absence of the Ward Manager.
- Mentor, support, and educate junior team members.
- Provide senior nurse site management coverage.
- Uphold accountability as outlined in the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
- Ensure all nursing care standards are met and maintain high clinical standards.
- Act as team leader and coordinate multidisciplinary care for a group of patients.
- Exemplify compassionate and inclusive leadership to foster a culture of collective leadership within the trust, engaging and empowering others, promoting ownership of learning and quality improvement, and facilitating teamwork across departments.
Qualifications
Essential
- First level live NMC Registered Nurse or Registered Mental Nurse.
- Relevant mentorship qualification or equivalent.
Desirable
- Leadership training.
- Management training.
- Diploma or degree in nursing.
- Specialty qualification.
