Position Overview
We are seeking a Surgical House Officer (SHO) to join our General Surgery department, focusing on Colorectal, Breast, and Urology specialties. This role is currently classified as a service position and does not hold educational accreditation. Candidates must possess full registration with the GMC to be eligible for this role.
This position presents an excellent opportunity for a foundational surgical trainee aiming to enhance their experience in general surgery. The successful candidate will encounter a diverse array of surgical cases, encompassing both elective and emergency procedures.
Initially, the SHO will participate in designated clinics as outlined in the job plan. As the SHO gains proficiency, they will begin to manage their own new patients and collaborate on treatment plans with the supervising consultant. Educational objectives will be established at the start of the role, with regular assessments of progress. The SHO will also engage in ongoing clinical research and audit projects within the surgical department.
Participation in the on-call rota is a requirement of this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Promptly assess and admit routine and emergency patients.
- Conduct ward rounds and visit individual patients as necessary.
- Maintain accurate records, ensuring they are dated and initialed, alongside other administrative tasks such as discharge summaries and clinic letters.
- Complete discharge summary documentation prior to patient discharge. Clinic letters will be dictated during clinics and transcribed by administrative staff.
- Oversee Foundation Year 1 and 2 doctors during clinical activities.
- Respond to occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances as directed by the appropriate Consultant(s), in consultation with colleagues when feasible. Additional responsibilities arising from this may be exceptional and not of a prolonged or regular nature.

Essential Qualifications
- Full GMC Registration with a License to Practice.
- Experience in General Surgery.
- Demonstrated ability and initiative to contribute to strategic objectives, support change, and enhance patient care.
- Capacity to develop, influence, and communicate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- On-call experience in Acute General Surgery.
- Familiarity with clinical audit processes and commitment to best practices.
- Evidence of involvement in quality and service improvement initiatives.
Desirable Qualifications
- Some experience with laparoscopic procedures, including diagnostic laparoscopy and appendicectomy.
