Norfolk, United Kingdom SHELTER Full time

We are seeking a motivated individual with legal expertise to take on the role of Legal Support Specialist, providing essential assistance to ensure the delivery of effective services.

This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to addressing the housing crisis.

Role Overview

In this capacity, you will support our attorneys in managing an active litigation caseload under Legal Aid, assisting individuals facing homelessness and housing-related challenges in asserting their rights.

Your responsibilities will encompass conducting casework as directed by the attorneys, gathering instructions and witness statements, drafting correspondence, submitting applications, and representing clients in court.

You will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with time recording and financial targets.

We promote a culture of flexible working, personal development, and a workplace where you can express your individuality and achieve success based on your abilities.

Candidate Profile

A solid understanding of housing and homelessness legislation, as well as the housing challenges faced by individuals in the region, is essential.

Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, are required, along with the ability to tailor your communication style to different audiences. Familiarity with case management systems for recording your work is also necessary.

While knowledge of Legal Aid is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite.

You should enjoy working collaboratively within a team, respond positively to change, and be willing to challenge existing practices and introduce innovative ideas when appropriate.

Employee Benefits

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family-friendly policies, pension contributions, and interest-free travel loans.

Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, payroll giving options, a cycle-to-work scheme, and an employee assistance program.

Shelter assists millions of individuals each year who are grappling with inadequate housing or homelessness through our advisory, support, and legal services.

We advocate to ensure that one day, no one will need to seek our assistance. Our mission is to ensure that no one faces the challenges of poor housing or homelessness alone.

About Our Legal Team

Our Legal team operates across England and comprises over 100 professionals dedicated to providing housing advice and litigation services to our clients.

We collaborate closely with other teams within Shelter Services, receiving referrals for certified litigation work, controlled work, and as part of the Housing Loss Prevention Advice Service.

The role is situated within our regional hub, where we have been delivering housing advice for over 25 years, with multiple offices and court desks available.

We engage with communities to understand and address their housing concerns, working in partnership to fulfill our objectives:

supporting individuals with additional needs, combating discrimination and disrepair in the private rental sector, and ensuring fair access to social housing throughout the region.

About Shelter
We believe that home is a fundamental human right. It is the foundation of our existence and where we flourish. Yet, every day, millions of individuals are affected by the housing crisis.

Our mission is to uphold the right to a safe home because home is everything.

We seek ambitious and passionate individuals to join us. This is your opportunity to contribute to the transformative change we are striving to achieve.

Our adversary is the social injustice at the heart of the escalating housing crisis.

To prevail in this struggle, we must reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and those who support our mission.

In all our personnel decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, equitable, and transparent. We are committed to combating racism both within and outside our organization. We welcome you on our journey toward becoming truly anti-racist.
