Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Consultant Paediatrician with a focus on Endocrinology, Oncology, or General Paediatrics to enhance our existing team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering acute paediatric emergency care and outpatient services, as well as providing Consultant of the week coverage for Paediatrics, Neonates, and the Paediatric Assessment Unit. On-call duties will include responsibilities in both acute Paediatrics and Neonatology (level 1).

Key Responsibilities

We invite applications for one full-time Consultant Paediatrician position within our department. The role will primarily be based in the Paediatric Department, with responsibilities extending across the organization.

Candidates should possess an interest or experience in Endocrinology, Oncology, or General Paediatrics. If the selected candidates lack specific experience, they will receive support to develop their expertise, which will be integrated into their job plan. Additionally, there will be opportunities to gain proficiency in other areas aligned with their clinical interests. There is also a pathway for a paediatrician with a focus on child safeguarding to evolve into the named doctor role.

This position will complement a team of 14 consultants, ensuring comprehensive attending and on-call services for General Paediatrics and Level 1 Neonatal care.

Job Responsibilities

Weekly Schedule:

Given the evolving nature of healthcare contracts, it is essential for all consultants to maintain a flexible approach to their working arrangements, which may include innovative patterns, including potential 7-day working in the future. The job plan will be reviewed regularly following the initial appointment.

The job plan (for a full-time position) will include the following components:

  • Direct Clinical Care: Average PAs per week (including clinical activities, administrative tasks, and both predictable and unpredictable work)
  • Supporting Professional Activities: Average PAs per week (including CPD, audits, teaching, and research)
  • Additional compensation for on-call duties will be determined once the job plan is finalized.

Candidate Profile

Qualifications

Essential:

  • GMC Registration
  • MBBS or equivalent professional qualification
  • MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry or within six months of obtaining Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview

Desirable:

  • SPIN training in the area of special interest

Experience and Knowledge

Essential:

  • Demonstrated comprehensive training and experience in the specialty
  • Extensive knowledge in the specialty with the ability to provide expert clinical opinions
  • Understanding of NHS structures, roles, responsibilities, and relationships within the multi-disciplinary team
  • Capability to independently manage service delivery without direct supervision

Teaching Skills

Essential:

  • Experience in supervising undergraduates, junior doctors, and other staff
  • Ability to teach clinical skills effectively

Communication Skills

Essential:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues and support staff
  • Evidence of management experience or training
  • Ability to advise on the efficient operation of specialist services
  • Capability to lead and manage the department
