High-Energy Laser Scientist Industrial Placement Opportunity

This industrial placement offers a unique opportunity to work with a world-leading team in high-energy laser science. As a member of our team, you will be involved in cutting-edge research and development, working on the design, development, and operation of high-energy lasers.
Key Responsibilities- Lead your own assigned project, under the guidance of a Technical Manager, where you will have direct influence over the outcomes
- Take an active role in experiments and support world-renowned scientists, learning new skills and experiences continuously
- Develop techniques to improve DiPOLE lasers for improved performance (higher energies and repetition rates) and explore new applications, both on your own and as part of a team
- Learn how to operate lasers; cryogenic systems; and high-vacuum systems in a clean room environment
- Learn and develop computer modelling and system control skills, to support your own project as well as other ongoing research activities
- Run experiments, analyse data and report your findings to the team, and other placement students, via written reports and presentations
- Network by attending local conferences and collaborating with other departments within CLF
- Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
- Required or have requested to take an industrial placement year
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- Able to commence employment in summer 2025
- Predicted grades corresponding to a 2:1 or higher
- Good problem-solving skills
- Good time management skills
- Highly motivated and able to work independently
- Enthusiastic about lasers
- Effective communication skills
- Works well in a team
- Responsible approach to health and safety
- Experience working in laboratories
- Experience with lasers / optics
- Experience with coding for data analysis
