Position Overview

We are seeking a distinguished individual to take on the role of Research Director within the School of Education. This position involves leading a dedicated team of scholars to foster a robust, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating research environment characterized by integrity and excellence.

The term for the Research Director position is typically four years, with the possibility of a two-year extension. The primary role of Professor of Education is permanent.

The Research Director will dedicate 500 hours annually to this role, contributing to the overall mission of the School.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Steering the strategic vision for the School's research and knowledge exchange initiatives to enhance research income, outputs, and societal impact.
  • Overseeing preparations for the upcoming Research Excellence Framework assessment.
  • Fostering a supportive research culture that empowers staff to reach their full potential.
  • Collaborating with leaders from various research centers to ensure effective delivery of research and knowledge exchange.
  • Managing the review process for research bids to uphold the highest standards.
  • Leading the School's publication strategy to maximize research visibility.
  • Advising the School's leadership on strategic investments in research and knowledge exchange.
  • Participating in college-level research leadership meetings and committees to align with broader institutional goals.
  • Ensuring compliance with national standards for contract research staff.
  • Chairing the School Research Committee to guide research initiatives.
  • Contributing to the development of the School's postgraduate research strategy.
  • Supporting scholarship activities in collaboration with the School's Scholarship Champion.
  • Building and maintaining essential external relationships to enhance the School's research profile.

As a Professor of Education, you will also be expected to:

  • Conduct high-impact research and deliver education that aligns with the strategic goals of the School.
  • Manage relationships with external stakeholders to bolster the University’s reputation.
  • Advance knowledge exchange and outreach efforts to strengthen ties with professional organizations.
Main Duties:
  1. Provide leadership across the School and College, managing research activities and enhancing the School's reputation.
  2. Maintain a portfolio of high-quality research outputs and secure funding through grant applications.
  3. Lead initiatives that embed research-led practices in teaching and learning.
  4. Engage in academic management to elevate the School's global standing.
  5. Supervise research projects and mentor students and staff effectively.
  6. Contribute to University committees to promote research integrity and impact.
  7. Foster collaborations to support academic staff development and enhance research.
  8. Represent the School at significant external events to promote research excellence.
  9. Ensure a strong track record of knowledge creation and transfer.
  10. Participate in professional development activities as necessary.
  11. Undertake additional duties as assigned by the Head of School.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant field, with a proven track record in research and teaching.
  • An established reputation for high-quality research and knowledge exchange.
  • Experience in academic leadership and management within an educational context.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Comprehensive understanding of current research issues and trends in education.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate research income and mentor colleagues.
  • Proven experience in delivering innovative, research-led teaching.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster collaboration.
  • Ability to build research partnerships across disciplines.
