Expert Speech and Language Therapist

Band 7, Part-time - 30 hours per week

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist with advanced training in dysphagia and substantial experience in evaluating and managing eating and drinking challenges. The ideal candidate will also possess experience in addressing a variety of intricate speech, language, and communication issues.

A background in AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) is advantageous and will enhance your application.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will deliver a specialized speech and language therapy service for children and adolescents facing severe and complex learning challenges within designated special schools, adhering to the Service Level Agreement.

You will play a pivotal role in shaping the speech and language therapy services offered to children and young people. Your responsibilities will include planning and executing comprehensive assessments, providing expert advice, and implementing treatment plans for a specific caseload of children and young individuals with significant needs. Collaboration with children, their families, and various professionals, including educational staff and the broader health team, is essential to mitigate the impact of these challenges on the social, emotional, and educational development of the children.

You will operate independently, exercising professional judgment and accountability for your actions.

Clinical Duties

- Manage a clinical caseload of children and young individuals in special schools, ensuring effective service delivery through independent workload prioritization.

- Address the needs of children with eating and drinking difficulties, conducting assessments, diagnoses, and appropriate interventions.

- Offer training and support to families and educational staff to facilitate the implementation of therapy programs.

- Assess, diagnose, and manage children with complex communication needs, utilizing AAC devices as necessary.

- Collaborate with school management and service leaders to enhance the speech and language therapy service.

Professional Leadership

- Assist in planning and delivering commissioned speech and language therapy services, participating in relevant meetings and developing protocols.

- Keep management informed of service delivery issues and participate in quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications:

  • Degree/Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council
  • Registration with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Postgraduate dysphagia training at intermediate level or equivalent

Essential Experience:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in pediatric speech and language therapy, particularly in dysphagia and AAC.
  • Proven track record of working with children facing eating and drinking challenges and complex needs.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary collaboration and effective communication.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
