Job Title: Director of Grid Operations - Renewable Energy Provider

Location: London, England, United Kingdom (Hybrid)

The Green Recruitment Company is currently partnering with a Renewable Independent Power Producer (IPP) seeking a Director of Grid Operations to enhance their UK team. The organization boasts a substantial pipeline of 6GW, with numerous projects poised for construction.

Role Overview:

We are looking for an experienced grid professional to optimize our internal grid targeting strategy. This position requires a thorough understanding of network dynamics, evaluating the compatibility of development initiatives, and providing in-depth analyses to support our teams. The Director of Grid Operations will work closely with senior leadership, offering technical guidance and oversight throughout all phases of project development.

In addition to strategy formulation, the Director will manage our grid connection processes, lead technical assessments related to grid for potential acquisitions, and stay informed about industry developments that may impact our long-term success.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Developing and refining our internal grid targeting strategy.
  • Overseeing all aspects of grid development.
  • Leading negotiations for grid offers, including pricing, timelines, and payment structures.
  • Acting as the primary liaison for all utility networks, both distribution and transmission.
  • Managing the tendering and selection processes for Independent Connection Providers (ICPs), defining project scopes, and evaluating submissions.
  • Collaborating with the team to evaluate grid suitability for early-stage initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with leading ICPs.
  • Providing technical support for grid connections during asset construction.
  • Establishing and managing internal grid technical standards and tools.
  • Conducting technical evaluations on grid and connection aspects for project acquisitions and divestitures.
Required Qualifications:
  • Over a decade of experience in the development and construction of medium to large-scale power generation projects, particularly in Solar PV and utility-scale battery systems.
  • Expertise in securing grid capacity, addressing grid challenges, and managing connection issues or delays.
  • In-depth knowledge of grid connection policies and regulations, including grid acceleration and queue management.
  • Well-connected within the electrical network sector, with active engagement in organizations such as the ENA.
  • Strong relationships with key industry stakeholders, including Independent Distribution Network Operators (iDNOs) and Distribution Network Operators (DNOs).
  • Familiarity with ICP design and construction, including contract negotiations.
  • Demonstrated commercial acumen and a proven history of managing grid offer and connection agreement processes.
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, complemented by relevant industry experience.
  • Understanding of market-standard construction and equipment costs, particularly regarding grid connections.
  • Experience in technical consulting, network utilities, or project development.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of technical best practices for connection work in both international and UK contexts.
  • Prior experience conducting due diligence for potential project acquisitions, focusing on grid connection risks.
  • Proven leadership capabilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including presentation and CRM tools.
  • Ability to manage complex tasks within tight deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working within a small, agile team.
  • High technical proficiency, particularly as a power engineer.
  • Exceptional reporting and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities to foster relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Capability to represent the organization at grid-related events and meetings.
