Job Purpose

The role involves facilitating classes and sessions in the area of expertise by demonstrating the MSc Cancer Research and Precision Oncology Core Skills course. This includes guiding students through practical exercises that align with the established learning objectives of the program.

The demonstrator will oversee specific tasks related to common cancer research methodologies and support students as they engage in hands-on activities.

Additionally, the role requires providing assistance as needed, including offering comprehensive explanations of how each activity connects to the broader field of study.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Facilitate classes and sessions in the subject area by demonstrating the MSc Cancer Research and Precision Oncology Core Skills course, catering to both small groups and individual students, while addressing inquiries related to the demonstrations and providing detailed insights into the relevance of the activities.

  2. Assist and guide students during their practical exercises, offering support where necessary.
  3. Maintain awareness of health and safety protocols, taking appropriate measures to ensure a secure environment and reporting any concerns to the course organizer.

  4. Contribute to the creation of teaching materials and instructional workbooks.
  5. Provide constructive feedback to students and the course organizer as required.
  6. Ensure that all equipment and materials for demonstrations and exercises are prepared and functional prior to the commencement of each session.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • A1. A Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 10 (Honours Degree) in the relevant subject area.
  • A2. In-depth knowledge of the subject matter and class/session being demonstrated.
  • A3. Understanding of the learning outcomes associated with the course.

Skills

  • C1. Strong communication skills.

Experience

  • E1. Proficiency in the techniques being demonstrated to students.
Job Features Dimensions

This position does not involve financial responsibilities and does not require supervision of other staff members. The demonstrator will lead sessions independently.

Planning and Organising Demonstrators must familiarize themselves with the subject matter to be presented and clarify any uncertainties with the course organizer or supervisor beforehand. They should also be aware of the relevant learning outcomes for the course and may need to address any issues that arise during the sessions.

Decision Making The demonstrator may evaluate simple student reports based on established criteria and provide feedback to the course organizer regarding any concerns related to student performance. Suggestions for improving session delivery may also be made to the course organizer. Key Contacts/Relationships

Students will primarily be undergraduate learners. In the academic context, the demonstrator will interact with the course organizer and other academic personnel. In technical or supervisory contexts, collaboration with relevant staff will be necessary.
