We are currently seeking a skilled and proactive Intellectual Property Counsel to become a vital member of our Intellectual Property (IP) team, located in London.

About The Role
The Intellectual Property Counsel will report directly to the Head of Patents and will primarily deliver patent and related IP support to Haleon stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
In addition to offering comprehensive patent and related advisory services to R&D scientists, legal teams, and commercial divisions, the Intellectual Property Counsel will:

  • Oversee IP matters associated with invention collection, patent drafting, prosecution, enforcement, freedom-to-operate assessments, competitive landscape evaluations, patent validity, infringement issues, IP risk management, and opposition and appeal cases for a selection of global brands.
  • Assist in complex patent and related projects.
  • Manage IP components of contractual agreements with external collaborators.
  • Support IP due diligence initiatives, including mergers and acquisitions, and litigation.

Collaboration

As an Intellectual Property Counsel at Haleon, you will join a team that reports directly to the Head of IP. Your role will involve close collaboration with other IP professionals globally, including brand rights attorneys and patent and trademark formalities staff. You will also engage closely with R&D scientists, legal experts, and various business stakeholders, fostering strong relationships with external partners. Haleon operates on a global scale, and you will be expected to communicate with colleagues worldwide.

Your Contributions

  • Facilitate invention collection within Haleon's global R&D teams.
  • Prepare and submit registered designs to safeguard the visual aspects of Haleon's products.
  • Manage all facets of a designated global IP portfolio, including drafting and prosecution tasks, while providing IP advisory services to R&D and business units.
  • Develop and implement IP strategies for new products on a global scale.
  • Establish, negotiate, and advise on all IP aspects for a diverse range of transactional matters: R&D agreements, licensing agreements, business acquisitions and divestitures, confidentiality agreements, etc.
  • Participate in oppositions, oral hearings, and appeals.
  • Provide patent validity and infringement guidance to R&D and relevant business units.
  • Promote IP awareness within Haleon's global R&D community and business teams.
  • Manage relationships and collaborate extensively with external counsel as needed.
  • Engage in various departmental activities, including meetings aimed at key information-sharing, case law awareness, and discussions on departmental practices and policies.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are looking for candidates who possess the following qualifications:

  • A degree in a STEM field.
  • Fully qualified European Patent Attorney.
  • Fully qualified UK Patent Attorney or national equivalent.
  • A minimum of 2 years' post-qualification experience, working within an in-house IP department or a reputable private practice firm supporting clients in chemistry, FMCG, and/or life sciences.
  • In-house experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • A solid commercial understanding and business acumen to leverage Haleon's IP for competitive advantage.
