Principal General Counsel - Intellectual Property

Quantinuum is seeking a seasoned intellectual property attorney to lead our patent strategy and manage our patent portfolio. As Principal General Counsel - Intellectual Property, you will play a critical role in shaping our company's intellectual property direction and ensuring the protection of our innovative technologies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement our patent strategy, including the preparation and prosecution of patent applications domestically and internationally.
  • Negotiate and draft IP-related provisions in commercial agreements and contracts.
  • Lead freedom to operate initiatives and tackle product clearance issues.
  • Develop and pursue IP enforcement strategies, as well as support IP defense tactics.
  • Educate our team on IP protection and collaborate with scientific staff to identify key innovations.
  • Guide patent review and freedom to operate committees.
  • Manage relationships with external legal counsel.
  • Perform IP due diligence for mergers and acquisitions.
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging trends and competitor activity in the quantum sector.
Requirements:
  • JD degree with active membership in at least one state bar.
  • Admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Minimum 8+ years of intellectual property legal experience.
  • Must be a U.S. person (defined as a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or green card holder, or a worker granted asylum or refugee status).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in physics, electrical engineering, or computer science.
  • Experience with patents, trademarks, copyrights, and open-source software.
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills, along with excellent business judgment and strategic thinking.
  • Broad experience working with patent, IT, commercial, software, and technology licensing contracts.
  • Ability to work independently and directly with senior business and executive leadership on IP matters.
  • Ability to focus on diverse intellectual property projects with rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong communication skills and executive presence.
  • Deliver on complex issues without guidance or supervision.
  • Experience in handling intellectual property transactions and IP litigation.
  • Understanding of deliverables and timeframes.
  • Ability to make complex, timely decisions.
  • Proven ability to solve problems with various variables.
