Job Overview

We are excited to introduce a pivotal role within our extensive multidisciplinary team aimed at improving the care provided to glaucoma patients.

The glaucoma sub-specialty represents one of several specialized areas within Ophthalmology. The primary objective of this position is to contribute to a dedicated glaucoma team, enhancing the efficiency of our high-volume outpatient clinics. You will play a crucial role in the glaucoma care process, performing diagnostic assessments and gathering patient histories.

Key Responsibilities

Your main duties will involve supporting the multidisciplinary team in delivering a streamlined and effective ophthalmic service. Responsibilities include conducting various ophthalmic evaluations such as visual field and acuity assessments, as well as eye pressure measurements to evaluate the visual capabilities of patients visiting the eye clinic. Additionally, the role encompasses ocular imaging, facilitating daily clinic operations within the Glaucoma department, and independently managing technician-led clinics. A vital aspect of this position is to assist medical teams in ensuring exemplary patient care. You will engage with patients in a courteous and professional manner.

Job Duties

  • Conduct Humphrey Visual Field testing to a high standard, ensuring that individual patient needs are met while maintaining dignity and privacy, always acting in the best interests of the patient. Ability to calculate and select appropriate lenses for visual field tests. Identify equipment malfunctions and inaccuracies during testing and report to the lead nurse.
  • Perform testing and documentation of visual acuity.
  • Execute OCT scans of the retinal nerve fiber layer.
  • Administer eye drops following the completion of a competency course under the supervision of medical staff.
  • Carry out basic procedures as delegated by trained staff, having been taught, supervised, and proven competent. This may include ORA, I-care, pachymetry, measuring glasses using the focimeter, and assessing a patient's refractive status using an auto refractor.
  • Assist outpatient clinical teams with glaucoma patients, including setting up and clearing the department. This role will involve flexible working days with both long and short shifts and cross-site work within the eye department.
  • Stay informed about advancements in ophthalmology and undergo further training as required by the Lead Nurse.
  • Attend in-service training and support meetings as provided. Participate in clinical governance and maintain equipment used within the Outpatient clinic, including data transfer and imaging equipment.
  • Adhere to the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act and work within the guidelines of hospital policies and procedures.
