Overview: AWE is excited to announce the Defence STEM Undergraduate Scholarship Program, providing a unique opportunity for students pursuing their engineering degrees.
About the Program: The Defence Undergraduate Scholarship Program aims to enhance the financial and professional prospects of university students by offering scholarships for up to three years of their degree courses. In light of rising living costs, AWE is proud to present this valuable opportunity.
This initiative is part of a broader program within the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, which includes scholarship offerings from AWE, the Royal Navy, the Submarine Delivery Agency, and the Ministry of Defence.
Your Role:
During the first year of the program, participants will engage in an introductory placement that does not require prior knowledge of engineering or defence, but rather a strong desire to learn. Over a nine-week period, you will immerse yourself in the intricacies of deterrence policy and defence strategies. This hands-on placement ensures that no two days are alike, typically conducted at our facilities.

Throughout the program, you may have the chance to delve into:
- The AWE Mission and its role in the UK's continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent
- Warhead engineering
- Building design and associated processes
- Facilities and plant maintenance
- Manufacturing engineering
- The lifecycle of nuclear warheads
- Nuclear threat reduction
Prior to graduation, there may be an opportunity for a further technical placement at AWE Aldermaston.
Benefits:

- Tuition fees covered (up to £9,250 annually)
- A yearly bursary to support living expenses while at university (up to £5,000 annually)
- A paid summer placement at AWE lasting 45 days
- Enhanced prospects for permanent graduate employment at AWE upon successful graduation and completion of the program
Program Details:
Participants can apply at any stage of their studies, provided they have not yet graduated. A 45-day paid work placement during the summer months is required, and there is a commitment to work with AWE for three years post-graduation. AWE also offers Year in Industry placements, which can be discussed with the Early Careers team.
Post-Graduation Opportunities:
Upon successful completion of your degree, you may be considered for a permanent position within AWE, either through the Evolve Graduate Program or as a direct entry graduate, depending on your experience and the company's needs.
Your contracted hours will be 37 hours per week, with a nine-day fortnight schedule. Compensation for summer placements at AWE is set at £22,250 pro rata.
The Evolve Graduate Scheme offers a competitive salary of £30,000 per year, along with a £2,500 welcome bonus and a comprehensive range of employee benefits.
