We are excited to present an opportunity through the Defence STEM Undergraduate Scholarship Program, designed to support students in their academic journey.
About the Program
AWE's Defence Undergraduate Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to university students, enhancing their educational and professional prospects with scholarships available for up to three years.
In light of rising living costs, AWE is committed to offering this valuable opportunity.
This initiative is part of a broader scheme operated by the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, which includes scholarships from AWE, the Royal Navy, the Submarine Delivery Agency, and the Ministry of Defence.
Your Experience
During the initial year of the program, participants will engage in a foundational placement that does not require prior expertise in engineering, science, or defence—only a genuine eagerness to learn.
Over a nine-week period, you will immerse yourself in the intricacies of deterrence policy and defence strategy. This hands-on experience guarantees that each day will be unique and enriching.
Before completing your degree, you may have the chance to undertake an additional technical placement at AWE Aldermaston.
Throughout the program, you will expand your knowledge in various areas, including:
- A wide range of scientific disciplines that underpin our mission. You will work with innovative materials in world-class research, manufacturing, and production environments, gaining experience with specialized equipment and processes that directly contribute to AWE's objectives. You will also gain insight into the regulatory framework that governs our operations and our interactions with regulatory bodies.

- Coverage of tuition fees (up to £9,250 annually)
- An annual bursary to assist with living expenses while studying (up to £5,000 each year)
- A paid summer placement of 45 days at AWE
- Enhanced prospects for securing a permanent graduate position at AWE upon successful completion of the program.
Program Structure
- Applications are welcome at any stage of your studies, provided you have not yet graduated.
- A 45-day paid work placement during the summer months is a requirement.
- Commitment to a three-year employment period with AWE following graduation is expected.
- AWE also offers Year in Industry placements for those interested in gaining further experience.
Post-Graduation Opportunities
Upon successful completion of your degree, you may be offered a permanent position within AWE, either through our Evolve Graduate Program or as a direct entry graduate, depending on your qualifications and the needs of the company.
Your standard working hours will be 37 hours per week, organized in a nine-day fortnight.
For summer placements at AWE, you will receive a pro-rata salary of £22,250.
Our Evolve Graduate Scheme offers a competitive salary of £30,000 per year, along with a £2,500 welcome bonus and a comprehensive range of employee benefits.
