Investment Analyst

Manulife General Account Investment (UK) serves as Manulife's primary European hub, focusing on sourcing both private and public fixed income opportunities across various local markets. This office works in tandem with Manulife's corporate finance teams located in Boston, Toronto, and Asia (including Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo) to evaluate and analyze investment transactions, providing guidance to portfolio managers across different regions. Enhancing Manulife's presence in the European fixed income sector is a key component of our strategic objectives.

Responsibilities: Reporting directly to the Head of European Corporate Finance and collaborating closely with senior team members, the successful candidate will operate as a fixed income investment expert. This role involves identifying and screening new investment prospects, as well as preparing and presenting these opportunities and their advantages to the wider investment team across various regions. The candidate will also be accountable for the ongoing assessment and periodic review of individual investments within the portfolio.

New Investment Opportunities:

The Investment Analyst is expected to utilize credit and transaction analysis skills, leveraging their understanding of Manulife's credit approach to work alongside senior team members in evaluating European private and public transactions based on credit quality, relative value, and portfolio requirements. The Analyst should develop expertise in various European markets, as well as North American and Asia Pacific markets, across all fixed income asset classes where Manulife is active. Engagement with UK and European public bond bookrunners and multiple internal stakeholders will be essential for public transactions. For private transactions, responsibilities will include analyzing privately placed EMTNs, USPPs, European private placements, schuldscheins, and project financings. The Analyst will work towards advising the broader group across Manulife offices on the merits of identified investment opportunities.

The Analyst will support senior members of the European Corporate Finance team in business development efforts aimed at expanding Manulife's European footprint. This includes researching and formulating investment strategies and parameters, regularly presenting targeted companies with financing needs that align with Manulife's cash flow, credit quality, and duration requirements. A proactive mindset and creative thinking are essential for success in this role. Understanding the tax and regulatory considerations of various Manulife entities and implementing these considerations is also crucial.

The Analyst will collaborate closely with sector analysts from the Boston, Toronto, and Asia offices on credit and transaction analysis, gradually taking on responsibilities for European sectors and credits. This role is integral to the team that advises portfolio management in Boston, Toronto, and Asia on credit and transaction matters on an ongoing basis. Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and teamwork are vital, as the role involves constant interaction with analysts, portfolio managers, and legal and tax professionals from various regions.

Investment Administration:

The Analyst will manage a diverse portfolio, ensuring an appropriate balance of duration, capacity, and credit risk while monitoring and disseminating sector and company developments promptly. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the portfolio's composition;
  • Monitoring developments that may impact credit risk and communicating these insights in a timely manner to relevant stakeholders, including team members, credit analysts, and portfolio management;
  • Evaluating corporate actions such as tenders or changes to investment terms;
  • Continuously identifying public and private credits that present attractive investment opportunities for Manulife.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

  • A strong interest in developing fixed income investment and credit analytical skills;
  • An undergraduate degree with a strong academic record;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and presentation abilities;
  • The capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Project management skills with a collaborative approach, including effective communication with key stakeholders (legal, accounting, portfolio) to advance joint initiatives;
  • A proactive attitude in a small but expanding team;
  • A strong desire to learn, succeed, and contribute to business growth;
  • Pursuit of an MBA or equivalent and/or the CFA designation is preferred.
