Swansea Bay University Health Board is seeking a highly skilled and specialized Orthoptist to join our team. As an autonomous practitioner, you will provide quality orthoptic services to both outpatients and inpatients in two acute hospitals within our health board.
Key Responsibilities:- Plan and organize paediatric refraction clinics in conjunction with Consultant Ophthalmologists, formulating treatment plans for future management based on individual diagnoses.
- Represent the department, health board, or professional body at local, regional, or national meetings as required.
- Prioritize appointments according to urgency, assessing new referrals from GPs, Optometrists, Health Visitors, School Nurses, and internal referrals from various specialties within the health board.
- Monitor patients' progress along the care pathway, ensuring the best possible visual function and cosmetic result.
- Accurately record and interpret visual fields using manual and computerized testing equipment.
- Maintain proper aseptic technique to minimize infection risk during intravitreal injections.
- Assess patients with learning difficulties, stroke, and other neurological abnormalities to obtain accurate reports despite challenging behavior or inability to perform.
- Deal with patient queries promptly via telephone, email, or post.
- Ensure accurate and appropriate patient records are kept in accordance with health board policy.
- Identify and minimize adverse side effects or risks associated with orthoptic treatment, such as eye drops or eye patches.
- Essential:
- Degree in Orthoptics or equivalent.
- HCPC Registration.
- Highly specialized knowledge and skills.
- Desirable:
- Evidence of postgraduate study in a relevant area of expertise.
- Teaching qualification.
- IT qualification.
- Essential:
- Working at Band 5 or equivalent.
- Evidence of CPD.
- Experience working as part of a multi-professional team.
- Understanding of wider healthcare issues within the NHS.
- Desirable:
- Previous experience at Band 6.
- Teaching experience.
- Evidence of taking part in research and audit.
- Essential:
- Good organizational and planning skills.
- Able to work unsupervised.
- Desirable:
- Ability to speak Welsh.
- Ability to teach other health professionals.
- Essential:
- Resilience, adaptability, and flexibility.
