We currently employ 7 consultants, with advanced plans to expand to 9 consultants. The advertised job is a replacement post with a primary interest in robotic assisted pelvic oncology surgery.

The urology department is allocated 2.5 robotic sessions per week, and it is anticipated that the applicant would average between 1-2 sessions per week on average. The department is considering triple session theatre lists.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing general and specialist urology care to our patients, with a subspecialist interest in pelvic oncology as experience allows. There are opportunities to develop links with neighbouring Oxford University Hospitals and to set up a regional functional robotic surgical service.

The Trust is a provider of surgical treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), including bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), Urolift, holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), prostate artery embolization (PAE), and green light laser prostatectomy. We have a Da Vinci Xi surgical robot and offer a robotic cancer service with upper tract surgery and prostatectomy, specialist stone surgery including supine mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL).

The National Spinal Injuries Centre, a world-famous centre for the management of patients with spinal injury, is based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where all colleagues support the spinal and urology surgeons in providing urological care to these patients.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will need to meet the following essential criteria:

  • MB, BS or equivalent qualifications
  • Full GMC registration
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register in Urology via CCT/ CESR/ European community rights
  • General training in Urological Surgery, FRCS(Urol) or equivalent (e.g. FEBU; CCST in Urological Surgery)
  • OR within six months of achieving CCST at the time of interview

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate:

  • Excellent leadership, organisational, communication, professional, and personal skills to undertake effectively the role of consultant
  • Evidence for surgical and clinical skills in Urology to undertake a consultant role
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Good spoken and written English
  • Communication skills should be highly developed
  • Experience of teaching doctors-in-training and undergraduates
  • Experience of clinical audit
  • Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS
  • Management training and experience
  • Computer skills
  • Communication skills training
