Position Overview

This role is classified as Band 5 plus RRP, with opportunities for overtime and on-call compensation. The position entails a full-time commitment.

The primary objective of this position is to provide professional support and execute mechanical trade operations and maintenance tasks across the Trust's facilities, as directed by supervisory personnel. This includes engaging in activities that may be challenging and/or non-standard, while ensuring adherence to the Trust's safety protocols, policies, and procedures. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the management and execution of planned engineering and building maintenance programs to ensure compliance with essential standards, both legislative and performance-related, as outlined in Service Level Agreements, while also meeting the requirements of the NHSLA when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate in accordance with the stipulations of HTMs, HBNs, British Standards, Model Specifications, and all relevant Statutory Regulations, Codes of Practice, and Trust Policies and Procedures, while identifying and suggesting modifications for the mechanical work area to the Mechanical Team Leader.
  • Prioritize work tasks on critical facilities that could adversely affect patient experience, such as nurse call systems, patient washrooms, and patient beds. The role necessitates the ability to prioritize and adapt to fluctuating workloads.
  • Contribute to the formulation, execution, and assessment of the Trust's Estates strategies, collaborating closely with other Estates Managers and Team Leaders in the development of work programs.
  • Assist in the establishment and management of safe working systems within the Estates framework (Permit to Work, isolation procedures) under the guidance of Authorized Persons to ensure that all safety protocols are correctly implemented.
  • Plan maintenance activities, including coordination with users and contractors.
  • Oversee maintenance assistants and operational estates contractors, delegating tasks and re-prioritizing as necessary, while ensuring the quality of specifications and workmanship.
  • Communicate with the Estates Helpdesk when addressing emergency maintenance requests and service complaints.
  • Act independently and inform senior staff of the implications of technical issues when responding to site call-outs.

Qualifications & Training

Essential:

  • HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
  • Recognized and registered EITB, City & Guilds, modern apprenticeship, NVQ level 4, or equivalent training in Mechanical/Engineering or Plumbing.
  • Demonstrable in-depth knowledge and experience in the relevant technical fields (heating, plumbing, ventilation, medical gases, decontamination, steam, etc.).
  • Full Driving License.

Desirable:

  • Training in Health & Safety, NEBOSH, IOSH, First Aid, etc.
  • Registration with recognized organizations, UK Register of Electricians, JIB Schemes, Gas Safe, etc.
  • Membership in relevant healthcare or engineering institutes, such as IHEEM, HEFMA, CIBSE, IET, etc.
  • Experience across multiple HTMs acting as either a Competent Person or Authorized Person.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential:

  • Understanding of maintenance methodologies.
  • Familiarity with HTMs, HBNs, and Estates-specific legislation.
  • Specialized knowledge acquired from working in a healthcare engineering environment or a willingness to work towards gaining such knowledge.
  • Multi-skilled in Mechanical Trades.
  • Experience in developing and implementing a 'safe system of work.'

Desirable:

  • Experience in a similar role.
  • Proficiency in using a PDA device/CAFM system.
  • Ability to perform small mechanical installation tasks.

Specific Skills
