We are in search of a seasoned Senior Psychiatric Consultant to oversee a dedicated team within our female-only Psychiatric Intensive Care Units and a mixed acute ward. This position demands a proactive and motivating leader capable of nurturing a professional and transparent environment that empowers our clinical personnel to deliver outstanding, empathetic care.
As the Senior Psychiatric Consultant, you will serve as a prominent and impactful presence within the healthcare facility. You will collaborate closely with a multi-disciplinary management team to ensure our services adhere to the highest regulatory benchmarks. Your leadership will be instrumental in guiding the strategic vision of our unit, consistently prioritizing safe, effective, and personalized care for each patient.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with clinical colleagues and management to develop a comprehensive treatment framework aimed at delivering high-quality responses to individuals facing various mental health challenges, grounded in evidence-based practices.
- Assume overall responsibility for a defined patient caseload, providing expert guidance on psychiatric care within your designated service area.
- Engage closely with the multidisciplinary team, fostering positive relationships with the Medical Director, Hospital Director, Clinical Services Manager, and external partners.
- Supervise the performance of Consultant Psychiatrists, ensuring systems are established to support appraisal and re-validation processes. Identify and address concerns regarding psychiatrists' conduct or performance.
- Provide effective professional leadership alongside other Consultant Psychiatrists, offering clinical supervision and mentorship.
- Work with the Responsible Officer to facilitate the appraisal and re-validation of fellow Psychiatrists.
- Represent the organization at local, regional, and national levels, enhancing the business's profile and establishing connections with commissioners, community teams, and other key stakeholders.
- Participate in an on-call rota with other Consultant Psychiatric colleagues.
- Ensure adequate consultant coverage across the facility as necessary.
- Engage in quality improvement and service evaluation initiatives, and pursue relevant research opportunities for both short- and long-term service enhancement.
- Contribute to educational and health promotion efforts within the Mental Health Service, maintaining proactive communication with General Practitioners.
- Lead the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program for the facility, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
- Provide insights and recommendations on initiatives requiring a medical perspective, such as implementing guidelines from national inquiries and external investigations.
Essential Qualifications:
- Approved Clinician status
- Membership in the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) with good standing in Continuing Professional Development
- Current registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in an inpatient environment
- Experience in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit
- Experience in Acute Services (Male or Female)
- Ability to make independent clinical decisions and demonstrate clinical leadership
- Knowledge of evidence-based practices
- In-depth understanding of the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Up-to-date knowledge of current practices in inpatient psychiatry
- Ability to prioritize clinical needs and organize effectively
- Evidence of participation in audit activities
