Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom SHELTER Full time

Are you passionate about understanding the impact of inadequate housing or homelessness on individuals? Do you possess the skills to facilitate the sharing of personal experiences and insights to enhance our services? If so, consider joining Shelter as a Community Engagement Coordinator, where you will play a crucial role in our mission.

About Shelter
A home is a basic human necessity, as vital as education or healthcare. Unfortunately, countless individuals across the nation face daily challenges related to homelessness, substandard living conditions, exorbitant rents, discrimination, and the looming threat of eviction.

We are committed to driving change at the individual, community, and societal levels, leading the charge towards secure housing for all.

We seek ambitious, top-tier professionals who are dedicated to our mission to join us during this pivotal time. This is your opportunity to contribute to the significant transformation we aim to achieve.

At Shelter, we are united by our commitment to uphold the right to a safe home. Our adversary is the social injustice that underpins the growing housing crisis. We believe that to succeed in this fight, our team must reflect the diversity of the individuals we serve and those who support our cause.

In all our personnel decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, equitable, and transparent.

We are dedicated to combating racism both within our organization and in the broader community, and we invite you to join us on our journey towards becoming a truly anti-racist organization.

About the Team
The Birmingham Hub comprises approximately 25 staff members and volunteers, specializing in housing advice and homelessness support, particularly for families and individuals facing multiple challenges.

We collaborate with various organizations to enhance the systems that hinder individuals from securing safe, suitable, and affordable housing.

Currently, we are engaged in a three-year partnership with a prominent financial institution aimed at fostering financial resilience and breaking the cycle of poor financial health that adversely affects housing situations.

About the Role
Your responsibilities will include collaborating with the financial resilience project to implement a series of engagement activities for both the Birmingham Hub and the broader organization. Your goal will be to ensure that the perspectives and experiences of individuals with lived experience of inadequate housing or homelessness inform and shape all of Shelter's initiatives.

Individuals with lived experience will participate in various ways, including:

  • Engagement groups
  • Participating in community events
  • Co-designing services and campaigns
  • Sharing personal stories and advocating for change regarding the housing crisis

We are open to discussions about flexible working arrangements, personal development, and fostering a workplace where you can be authentic and achieve success based solely on your abilities.

About You
To excel in this role, you should have experience in facilitating engagement groups and other activities that involve individuals with lived experience in Shelter's initiatives.

You must possess a deep understanding of how housing issues affect individuals, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can contribute.

Additionally, the ability to plan and coordinate multiple engagement activities simultaneously with local teams is essential.

You will need to cultivate successful relationships with colleagues across Shelter, as well as with external local organizations and partners.

Some experience in presenting information both verbally and in writing is required, along with proficiency in IT, including case management systems, Microsoft Office, internet usage, email, and online meetings.

Benefits
We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including 30 days of annual leave (pro rata), enhanced family-friendly policies, pension contributions, and interest-free travel loans.

Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, payroll giving, a cycle-to-work scheme, and an employee assistance program.
