Role Overview:


The Lead HPC Systems Engineer position is designed to directly influence the architecture, execution, enhancement, and service provision of the institute's High-Performance Computing (HPC), Cloud, and Research Data Storage solutions. This role encompasses a blend of on-premise and cloud-based systems, ensuring that the institute delivers cutting-edge and innovative Scientific Computing capabilities to its researchers, collaborators, and partners.


This position is part of the Research Computing Platforms/HPC team, which provides essential services to the research community and collaborates closely with various Research Labs and Science Technology Platforms (STPs) throughout the institution.

The team operates as a specialized segment of the Infrastructure and Cloud Platforms group within the IT Office, offering excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and implementation of research data platforms, both on-site and in public/private cloud environments.
  • Oversee storage systems, managing aspects such as quotas, directory structures, and data distribution across various storage systems and tiers, accessible from Windows, Mac, and Linux clients.

Systems Engineering:


In collaboration with junior team members, establish proof-of-concept systems and services to address evolving scientific needs, providing innovative solutions to advance ambitious scientific initiatives.


Create documentation and offer training and guidance to research teams on best practices in research data management utilizing the computing platforms managed by the institute.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in managing high-performance parallel and object storage systems, services, and data for research, such as IBM Spectrum Scale, Lustre, Ceph, iRODS, etc., ideally in a mixed client environment (Windows/Mac/Linux).
  • Experience in deploying and managing HPC systems and scheduler policies, including SLURM and SGE.
  • Advanced proficiency in Unix/Linux systems administration and integration, including:
    • Scripting and automation using at least one high-level programming language, preferably Python.
    • Networking knowledge, including Ethernet, TCP/IP, and ideally InfiniBand, along with monitoring and logging tools.
