**Job summary**:
This is a challenging and rewarding specialist clinical role with a balanced portfolio of proactive programme development and reactive outbreak and incident response. The role will involve contributing to UKHSA’s preparedness and response to acute respiratory infections including avian and other zoonotic influenza, _Legionella_ and coronaviruses other than SARS-CoV2. They will also join, with appropriate training, the Division’s team of staff who respond to novel infection incidents.

The mission of the TB, acute respiratory, zoonosis, emerging infection and travel health division is to protect the public from respiratory, imported, emerging and novel infections through world-leading public health microbiology and virology, outbreak response, surveillance, research and interventions. We are a multidisciplinary team delivering surveillance, epidemiology, public health and clinical advice, microbiology and virology, incident and outbreak response, and advice to government. We work closely with NHS England and NHS Trusts, with international agencies and colleagues, and in a fully integrated way with multiple academic partners, with associated research opportunities.

**Job description**:
The job is designed to cover a range of clinical infection activities in the Division:

- Contribute intellectual and scientific leadership to the ARI Unit.
- Participate in Unit and directorate management activities.
- Line manage ARI unit staff as delegated by the Unit Head.
- Contribute to education and training of clinical and scientific staff.
- Develop and execute clinical and epidemiological studies in the area of respiratory infection.
- Provide medical input to incidents and outbreaks related to respiratory infections.
- Ensure that the ARI Unit works to the highest standards of Clinical Governance.
- Support and develop the CEI workforce, in line with UKHSA’s remit, to support capability and capacity, including technical and professional skills to meet the challenges involved in protecting and improving the public’s health.
- Ensure that the Health & Safety of staff is paramount, that the H&S arrangements for your service are of the highest standards, and that you work closely with the HSE to address any recommendations that they may have in a timely fashion.

**Person specification**:
The job is designed to cover the full range of clinical and public health infection in the UKHSA Acute Respiratory Infections unit, including, but not limited to, those pathogens causing community respiratory infections of public health significance (excluding vaccine preventable infections) and emerging respiratory infections including zoonotic influenzas and coronaviruses other than SARS-CoV2.

The purpose of this post covers eight broad areas:

- Contribute intellectual and scientific leadership to the ARI unit.
- Participate in Division and Directorate management activities
- Line manage ARI staff as delegated by the Unit head.
- Contribute to education and training of clinical and scientific staff
- Develop and execute clinical and epidemiological studies in the area of acute respiratory infection
- Contribute to relevant public health policies and guidance.
- Provide medical input and leadership to incidents and outbreaks related to acute respiratory
- Ensure that the ARI unit works to the highest standards of Clinical
