Leeds has one of the largest Childrens Hospitals in the country, delivering surgical procedures to over 12 000 children per year, including approximately 300 neonates. The trust delivers around 500 congenital cardiac operations per year. Leeds congenital unit is the second largest unit in the UK for interventional cardiology procedures, with around 600 congenital, 100 electrophysiology and 50 pacing procedures per year. It provides paediatric cardiac anaesthesia services for patients from the local population as well as, a very large tertiary referral area.

Other specialist paediatric services in Leeds include laparoscopic and robotic surgery, airway surgery, liver and renal transplant, neurosurgery, and major plastic reconstructive surgery. The trust is also a paediatric major trauma centre with a 16 bed PICU, a 6 bed HDU and a tertiary NICU. MEDICAL STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT The Anaesthetic Department Leeds Teaching Hospitals employs over 149 Consultant Anaesthetists, each with their own subspecialty interest. The Department of Anaesthesia is based across two sites at St James Hospital and the Leeds General Infirmary.

Leeds Childrens Hospital Anaesthetic Department The Childrens Hospital is located within the Leeds General Infirmary. There are 22 Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists, 6 Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthetists and 10 PICU Consultants. The surgical and cardiology teams comprise of 4 Congenital Cardiac Surgeons and 10 Cardiologists (including 3 interventional and 2 electrophysiology/pacing cardiologists). OBJECTIVES OF THE POST 1.To work with paediatric cardiac anaesthetic colleagues in the provision of a comprehensive paediatric cardiac anaesthetic service in the Leeds Childrens Hospitals.

2.To develop or consolidate expertise in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia and fulfil all requirements for advanced training in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia. 3.To maintain and contribute to the teaching and research activities, already established within the Trust. 4.To support service plans for the specialty, taking account of the changes in clinical practice and new technologies available. 5.To participate in and progress clinical governance.

Access to paper based as well as electronic publications is available in the hospital library and within the anaesthetic department. The involvement of trainees in research is encouraged and supervision is provided. PC access and other I.T. support is also available.

It will also give significant opportunities for clinical audit and research. Summary of post The post is for one year and can be tailored to previous experience but the majority of time will be spent in paediatric cardiac theatres with a proportion of the time in the cardiology interventional lab and cardiac MRI. Other modules would include dedicated time with perfusion (2 weeks), transthoracic echo/transoesophageal echo (1 month with cardiologists and sonographers), Research/QI/Audits and congenital cardiac education in the form of monthly CCAN formal teaching and involvement in departmental/PICU SIM training. Time on PICU can be arranged depending on the needs of the individual.

This post will have an out of hours banding supplement. Shift patterns are normal and long days, nights as well as some weekend commitments. The shift pattern in currently 1:8 and the out of normal working hours work commitments will be on the general paediatric registrar rota. Daytime work/training will be in paediatric cardiac theatres and other cardiac areas.

LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University and Leeds School of Medicine for undergraduate teaching, and all clinical fellow and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme. The post holder will be required to participate in the informal teaching of medical students, nurses and operating department practitioners/assistants. The post holder will have access to the Trusts extensive and spacious library in the Clinical Sciences Building that house approximately 5,500 books and several hundred journals. Staff in this library will also arrange loans of books etc.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING The post will have protected time for clinical audit, research and teaching. The trainee will be expected and encouraged to take part in these activities as part of their one-year training post. LTHTs anaesthetic department has an active academic department that is attached to the University.

Trainees will be required to attend regular monthly M&M meetings and bi-monthly paediatric Journal club.
