The NHS has committed in the Long-Term Plan to improving care for children and young people with complications related to severe obesity. In the East Midlands 2.5% of reception and 4.7% of year 6 children are severely obese (BMI >99.6th percentile).

NHS England have commissioned specialist Complications related to Excess Weight (CEW) clinics across the country to start to develop a service model to support these patients. In the East Midlands, this clinic is based in Leicester and Nottingham with regional spokes.

The multi-disciplinary team comprises of consultant paediatric endocrinologists, a specialist nurse, dietitians, physiotherapists, social workers, youth worker, clinical support workers and administrative staff.

This role is based at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham but will involve working with and supporting young people across the region.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the development of services for young people at Nottingham University Hospitals.

To act as an advocate and source of support for young people within the Nottingham Children’s Hospital and relevant adult services.

To work flexibly to assist with the provision of a varied programme of personal, social and educational developmental activities with due regard for the needs and opinions of young people. This will include evenings, weekends and residential work.

To participate as a professional member of the Youth Service and contribute to the care of the patients of the Trust, relating to their all round cultural and diversity, developmental and emotional needs.

To contribute to the development of the Youth Service through identified project aims communicating effectively with the Youth Service Manager and the Paediatric and Adult Specialist Teams.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To assess the social, developmental and educational needs of individuals and groups of young people and help deliver appropriate programmes and activities.
- To establish relationships with key individuals and, as appropriate, parents/carers and siblings.
- To plan and contribute to the delivery of the NUHYS programme, including one-to-one support, group work, project work, hospital youth club, trips & residentials.
- To work alongside the NUH Youth Forum to create opportunities for young people to participate in service development and actively share their views within the Trust.
- To participate in team meetings and reviews etc. inputting ideas and professional opinion on young people’s needs and programme delivery.
- To support young people in their community, if necessary, to help re-establish their normal routines e.g. returning to school. Enable young people to access appropriate community support services such as health, social, educational or legal services. To establish contact and relationships with groups and organisations to help establish young people in their local communities.
- To ensure practice is in line with underpinning youth work principles, NUHYS aims and to maintain an awareness of the national youth work agenda.
